Is my platy pregnant, fat, or sick?

Greetings Fishlore

So I have this platy, "The Rescued One", or Rescue(d) for short. As you may have guess Rescued is a rescued fish. She was not kept in the best conditions prior to the two weeks that I have owned her. My tank had just finished cycling when I was asked to take her in, so I said why not.

Anyways, today I noticed that her belly is rather large! I have never owned platys before so I am not sure as to whether she is pregnant, fat from overfeeding, or has a disease like dropsy. I have included some pictures of Rescued.

Mods, if you feel this thread should belong in Species Specific: Livebearers then feel free to move it. I posted this here because I felt that it is a pretty newby question.

Thank you everyone in advance for taking the time to help out Rescued!

p.s. Yes I know I need to get a better heater, I've read bad reviews about it.

If she was kept with male platys in the last tank then the chances are that she is pregnant. Most livebearer females can and do store sperm for up to 6 months. They can use that sperm to reinsemenate (spelling is probably off, sorry) themselves. That's why if you toss a bunch strains of platy into one tank the females are no longer good for selective strain breeding. (That is to say you would lose 6 months of their breeding time.)

Hi!

If she was previously kept with males - then she stands a good chance of being pregnant. Otherwise - I say she looks like a normal Platy. Platys are just like stomachs with fins!

Looks like she's pregnant, although they're easily able to get to look like her with how they eat. Looks like she's healthy though.
