Would this be ok?

Ok at my dads house(I know this is overstocked which is why we are moving them) I have this in a 16 gallon tank, 1 rainbow shark, 2 hatchet fish, and two ghost catfish, we are cycling a 30 gallon tank, and are going to move them into the 30 gallon when it's done cycling. Would it be ok to add a needle fish? Or if not any other cool exotic fish? Thanks!

I don't know much about needlefish, but the tank you have doesn't sound too overstocked.

Ok, it's just that I was at Petsmart and saw them and they looked really cool and different so I want one really bad.

before you add anything new, get 4 more hatchets and 4 more catfish. THey are a schooling fish and you will like them a whole lot better when they have more buddies to swim with.

rainbow shark- 6 inches

6 ghost catfish- 18 inches

6 hatchets- 15 inches

total= 39 inches

this is 6 inches over, but could work if you do higher waterchanges and a stronger filter. If you want to make the fish you have now happy this is what I would do.

Oh. Ok, well I'm not sure what the measure is correctly, but I know it is atleast 30. Does anyone know anything about needle fish? I would really want some if I had a big enough tank. I am looking at 55 gallon tanks, would that be big enough?

usually 10 inches but could get up to 28. If you get a 55 and put the previous list and the needle fish, the needle fish will eat them. You might be able to put the shark in with it but might not. needle fish need pairs anyway, so I wouldnt recommend one unless you have a big (55-100) tank and want it to be species tank.

Needlefish? Isn't that a marine fish? I just googled it and unless there is something else, these are not a freshwater fish, and grow from 15-30 inches!

Oh, ok. Good, because I was getting scared because Petsmart has close to acurate fish information, close, but not completely acurate. Would a killi fish be ok if it is a 55?

Yup, I realized that, I wish they didn't though. They would make great pets.

Hi!

As angelfish says - Hatchets are schoolers - but you can get away with 3 cats. However - with Hatchets you must keep them in a school - it is not acceptable to have them in numbers under 5; as they rely on a school.

Ok, we'll get four more of them, and another ghost catfish. I like the hatchets they're cool, but hide in the lily pad.

this is proof you dont have a school of them, when hatchets are in schools they almost always are flinting around the tank, chasing each other.

I have never had killis but after looking a little online, you could keep a killi as long as you have a tight lid (they are jumpers) and get a non-surface dwelling killi. Your best bet is to get 1 healthy male, a non-proven pair will kill each other

Ok, and yes, I know I don't have a school of hatchets, yet. When we make the tank change, this week, we are going to Petsmart to get some more hatchets, and one more ghost catfish.

So your final list will be .....

6 hatchets- 15 inches
3 ghost catfish-9 inches
rainbow shark- 6 inches

30 inches, Perfect!!

I cant wait till you get your tank, you will have so much fun with these interesting fish.
