Hi!

They do it to catch insects, and escape predators. Hatchetfish are carnivorous, I recommend you give them things like Bloodworm regularly.

Ok, but it is still hard to imagine a fish 2" jumping that high. I'm going to go see if there is a video on it. I would love to see how they jump!

Hi!

Yeah - it's extraordinary! Mind you, look at those fins on the top of their body. They look like wings, don't they? That's how they do it. Did you know hatchetfish are the only actively 'flying' fish in the world? They beat their 'wings' , wherass what we call a 'Flying fish' only jumps and glides. Want any more hatchet trivia?

Yeah! That is really cool! I never would have guessed that a tiny fish could jump so high!

Hi!

You just have to watch they don't fly really fast into the ceiling! One way to euthanize a fish is to throw it against a wall. It's not my favourite method, but you don't want suicidal hatchetfish!
