New to Aquariums

Got a 10gal tank yesterday for the first time. My question is, since its my starter/feeler tank what would be a good fish to start with. Im not worried about having lots of little fish, I would like more of a setup with two or three medium sized fish.

Hopefully this tank will work out and I will be able to upgrade after a little while.

thanks

Make sure to cycle it, also a good fish to start with a 10 gallon would be a
livebearer like a swordtail or platy. Still its up to you check out this link
and look for fish profiles that have good for freshwater beginner next to it.

Yeah I set it up last night and was planning on letting it do a fishless cycle w/food. Would it be better to do a cycle with fish and what fish would you recommened for this?

Well the pros of the fishless cycle are that it eliminates the risk of losing fish
by means of a non-cycled tank. Though it is relatively slow and takes time to get fish. If you do do a fish cycle I would recommend zebra danios,
because most likely all of them will survive the cycle. Also, they wil school with many other species. For a 10 gallon tank I would get maybe 6 danios total. Add them 1 at first and then a week later at 2 then continue untile you have 6.

I don't know of any, most cichlids need at least a 30 gallon.

Hi!

Try either a male and female pair of Dwarf gouramis or a Betta. (Siamese fighting fish)
They both go great in small tanks. Although I'de recommend you start with a tank of at least 20 gallon...

Oh yes, and do a fishless cycle. I find it easier than a fish cycle - and it's probably a wiser choice for a beginner.

I agree with hatchetHeaven. For a 10 gallon tank a male and female pair of Dwarf Gouramis.

Get a few live plants to. Looks nice and you will probably get a few small snails that will help clean up waste. Just be prepared for a infestation.

Hi, Chandler, WELCOME to FISHLORE...

Did you read all the articles up at the top of this page for setting up a tank ? Take special care to read the one on the nitrogen cycle. It is really important to do this before adding fish. Also, don't overstock your tank. A 10 gallon tank really limits the fish you can have, and the total inches of fish (their adult size) that you can put in is 10, so do your homework before you buy, it will save lots of headaches in the end......Good Luck

Welcome to FishLore.

It's faster, easier and more humane to do a fishless cycle. I don't think any cichlids would do well in a 10g tank.

There is a cichlid that can be kept as a pair in a 10 gallon. This is the tiny shell dwelling cichlid (Neolamprologus brevis).

If you decide you'd like to try them, please do lots of research beforehand.

Here's some info.

dont get a male and female dwarf gouarmi. ive had experience with this. the male will most likely end up hurting the female in such a small tank, because the female will hav nowhere to run. id stick with 1 male

Hi!

OK. I think as long as he dosn't start bubblenesting its OK. I guess a pair of males might get along, but I heard they don't get along.

Hi!

That would have had a lot to do wit hit. Different speices of Gourami generally get along.
