If you have enough money and are willing to accept the responsibility, then why not? Keeping a fish tank is a wonderful, fun adventure! It will also become the center of attraction of your house and just watching the fishes' movements is very fun and reduces lots of stress!
Now, as a beginner, you should get at least a 20 gallon tank. Yes, it sounds quite pricey and rather big, but tank sizes below 20 gallons is very hard to maintain because the water parameters keep changing and so small tanks are recommended for experts and professionals only. You might want to get a 20 gallon tank instead of a 14 gallon to make things easier. 20 gallons is perfect, but of course, the bigger, the better and easier to maintain, but 20 gallons will do just fine. This is because when the tank is big, the water parameters will change VERY slowly and thus it's easy to maintain, and so great for beginners.
There are lots of beginner fishes to choose from; some examples are: Tetras, Gouramis, Barbs, Guppies, Mollies, Platies, and Swordtails.
These fish are easy to care of because they are very hardy fish(can survive in bad water conditions) and so they can survive most beginner mistakes. But you should research first about the fish you are planning to get because some may be aggressive, some may need a bigger tank, and many more.
Do a LOT of research to get you ready for fishkeeping. In the Fishlore homepage there are lots of articles for guiding beginners and many others, but also try to research on other websites and sources. Research, research, and research some more.
If you have some problems with your tank and can't find the answer, always feel free to ask us here at the forum. You are very welcome!
Goooooooooood luck!
