New 30 gallon tank, help identify parts that it came with
I just recently set up a 10 gallon tank and have been reading up alot on fish keeping, my 10 gallon is cycling right now and i just ordered a master test kit and a python to change the water.
Today I was just given a 30 gallon tank, I believe the size is 30 gallons, does any one know how I can take the dimensions and figure out the volume the tank will hold.
Also the tank came with a few parts, I have included some pictures and would like to identify what one of them is.
It came with 2 air pumps and a large filter, is this like a double filter or how does it work?
What is the device in the 3rd picture?
and last, the last picture is where i have my 10 gallon tank in the living room, im wondering if i should put the new tank on this stand, mostly im wondering if it will support it, or should i put it on the old radio which is located my kitchen.

An easy way to calculate the volume of a tank is(all in inches) LxWxH
231
That should give you the amount in gallons.
As for the stand, I wouldn't risk it, it would probably save you lots of money down the road to buy a stand.

Thank you, i have determined that it is now a 20 gallon tank.
I would like to buy a stand , there is really no room in my new apartment, this old radio is pretty solid and i think it should definitely stand the weight until i get a new place, which wont be for quite a while

that filter is just a single filter but has spots for 2 bags to better circulate the water in the tank from the center.
i've seen how heavy those old 'electronics' are and it may well hold the 200+ pounds the aquarium will put on it. wherever you decide to put the tank, you could do what we did with our dresser before putting 2 10g tanks on it - have a few people sit or stand on it for a little bit.. maybe move around.. look & listen for ANY signs of stress. It's not exactly a scientific test and you still risk it giving in under long-term weight stress. you can alleviate it some by having as little substrata as possible. and if you don't have fish yet, you can set the tank up and let it cycle - that should take a month or more -- if the tank is still good then, at least you'll be more secure in the weight being ok and have a cycled tank ready for fish.
check out our DIY section and maybe talk to timg about ideas for a stand. he's VERY skilled with building his own custom tanks, stands, etc and fitting them into all kinds of spaces.

I would agree with FLBettaCouple on the standing or sitting on the stand for a while, if you weigh about 200lbs or know some people that your added weight is above 200lbs, just sit or stand on it for about 1/2 an hour and that will really test it.

i just washed the tank up pretty good, and tried cleaning all the old crud off of every thing, i wiped most of it off with paper towel, the water intake tube is pretty cruddy on the spots that i cant get to, would it be wisest to just purchase a new one?
the guy that gave it to me had it sounds like many many years ago, and had gold fish in it , he said they were really messy so he stopped using it and put it in storage.

Yeah after cleaning the filter yesterday i was just looking at it and the smell is very rancid, What filter would any one suggest.
edit:
I ended up running alot of hot water through it and actually got it clean so I will stick with this, it is a whisper 30- 60 power filter for sure. I looked up the specs on it and it says it is for a 30-60 gallon tank, is this going to be too much filtration for my 20 gallon that it came with?
Also the unit is a power head, I tested it out in a bucket and it works pretty good, I would like to put it in my tank. Would this setup work well for me?
Re: New 30 gallon tank, help identify parts that it came with
i really like the whisper power filters.. and i feel like a bit of extra power in the filtration is fine. i'm not sure about the power head, i've not used one.. i think some other members have though and can help you out there.
