Prime + Top Fin Water Conditioner?

I have a 58 gallon tank that has been fishless cycling since Saturday. I filled it up with tap water and treated it with Top Fin Water Conditioner. Is it good/ OK for me to add Prime Water Treatment for the slime affect? If I put in the Prime product in along with the same kind of Top Fin chemicals, will it double up something and make my ammonia levels screwy?

Re: Prime + Top Fin Water Conditioner?

It shouldn't hurt anything, but I am thinking it is kind of a waste to use 2 products to condition your water. Only one is needed, so pick your favorite. If you like the added slime coat function of Prime, then use it over the other.

Re: Prime + Top Fin Water Conditioner?

I looked up the top fin conditioner and it doesn't have anything you wouldn't get with Prime. Some conditioners, like NovAqua+, add vitamins or minerals and could be used with Prime if you wanted to, but that would be up to you if you wanted to be spending on 2 water conditioners.

Re: Prime + Top Fin Water Conditioner?

During a fishless cycle, I would not use an ammonia detoxifier like Prime in the tank. It will only bind up some of the ammonia (needlessly in this case as there aren't any fish in there for it to hurt) and make it seem to take longer to cycle. It's not really taking any longer, it's just that the bound up ammonia takes longer to be eaten by the good bacteria so you get ammonia readings in your tank even though all new ammonia is being removed right away. Also the Top Fin Water Conditioner has a slime coat treatment as well, but that's not needed at this point either considering there aren't any fish to take advantage of it at the moment .
