Help with free fish tank!

Hello. Thanks for reading my post. Ill try an make it short. I recently took ownership of a 55gl fish tank with all the fixings of a friends x boyfriends. She didn't know much about it and neither do I, she gave away most of the fish except one.. or two come to find out.. I got it all moved and re-setup, finally figure out the wet/dry trickle system.. After doing much much reading, I put what i think is either a firemouth cichlid or convict fish and a really really small baby fish back in the tank.. They seem to be doing well, although there not eating yet that i can see after 2 days. I assume its because there just stressed from the move.. So my questions is, after a week or so I would like to buy more fish, what fish would you think would be compatible with this one.. Here is a pic of the fish!

P.s. I'm really starting to enjoy the fish world!

Re: Help with free fish tank!

Free tanks are cool! I wish I could say that from experience.

Is the tank still cycled? If it was down for any length of time, it may need to recycle, which you should do before adding any more fish. Your cichlid would probably do best with a tank of other cichlids, though maybe someone can chime in with some more specific suggestions.

Good luck!

Re: Help with free fish tank!

Yeah, I could only imagine how much all this stuff would cost.. I only had the tank down for about an hour to move, did a little scrubbing, no soap of course, and cleaned the filters, but did not clean the bio balls, tank rocks and gravel, puts some chems in for the chlorine and some biozyme, hopefully I didnt need to do a full cycle the tank....

Re: Help with free fish tank!

Sounds like you are probably in good shape. When you go to the pick up more fish, take a small water sample...most shops will test it for you so you can be sure your water is good. Eventually you will want your own test kit.

Anyway...very cool! Do you have any particular candidates in mind for what you want to add?

But i was thinking some sucker fish to start, then some more ciclids, like maybe a oscar but heard those are hard to keep up with, some of those blue ciclids, not sure really, I just want them to get along... I heard your not suppose to mix south american and african cichlids?
