Used tank buying

I am looking into getting a used tank with most parts coming with it. Is there any suggestions that I should know about? Maybe certain likes to look out for, what to put in it, anything at all. I'm new at this, and I would love your advice! Thanks!

Re: Used tank buying

Before you buy it, make the seller fill it and look for leaks and test all his equipment while there's water.

Re: Used tank buying

I bought all my tanks (30g. 46g. 55g. 75g. 130g.) used. They were all leak tested while I was there, and I have never had a problem with them. If someone won't take the time to let you check out all the parts and equipment they are selling you, look elsewhere. I have got a few junk filters and heaters, but that was my own fault for not looking closely. There is really nothing wrong with buying used tanks. I would just recomend giving them a good cleaning (without soap of course) before you go into the full set up.

Re: Used tank buying

We've gotten a couple tanks at yard sales that way and it's a good way to pick up a deal on yet another tank to help you get advanced MTS. The advice already given is good and we wish you best of luck with finding a good used tank.

Re: Used tank buying

Thanks for the help. I was also wondering if there was a specific spot where good used tanks can be found, or if it is just luck to run across one. I have been looking at craigslist.com. If anyone is familiar and has had experience, please let me know!

Re: Used tank buying

It's really luck. If you can find an aquarium club nearby, they might have a classified section. The tanks go for really reasonable prices, usually, and because it's a community, you're less likely to get someone who sells you a piece of junk (if they do, they'll get a bad rep in the club). I have a list of US aquarium clubs right in front of me. If you live in the US and want to know what clubs are in your state, let me know what state and I'll give you some contact info.
Also, with the testing stuff out, I kind of let the amount I'm paying decide whether I test or not. For example, a couple of weekends ago, I got about $200 worth of tanks and equipment for $4 at a firefighter's garage sale. Since it was only $4, I figured I'd just test it at home. Even if everything's broken, I only lost $4, and it goes to the guys who put fires out in the city.

Re: Used tank buying

I have been trying freecycle, nothing big yet. I live in St. Louis, Missouri. Thanks

Try www.missouriaquariumsociety.org

They meet in Maryland Heights. I don't know where that is in relation to St. Louis, but a bit of a drive is worth it for an inexpensive, quality tank.

Regular looks on ebay are worthwhile.
