Long story short, my mom came home from a bat mitzvahs with three 3-inch goldfish in bags. They were handed out as some sort of "party-favor" (don't get me started on that) and came with TINY 6-inch wide, maybe 4-inch deep bowls that are much too small for anything that size to live in.

We put 2 in half-gallon vases and one in its tiny bowl. We have a large jar we could put the one in the TINY bowl in, but it's plastic (it says not microwavable, not dishwasher safe). Can a fish live in plastic? We also have 12x6-ish storage bins I thought we could maybe poke holes in... Not sure of what they're made of though.

Quick response is HIGHLY appreciated, I want to make sure these poor fish last the night!!

(Note... we do have other fishtanks, but none seem compatible with these goldfish... one has a betta in it, one has too many guppies in it already, and the last one's got an aggressive angelfish)

For the night you can put them in plastic as long as there is no soap remaining, not even a tiny bit, on the plastic. Or, being a basic goldfish, they are probably ok in one container together- perhaps the bucket you use for water changes? FYI you might be able to give them to a local fish store if you aren't able to keep them.

Hey,

Yea, that's a fish emergency my friend. One thing we do when something like that comes up is grab rubbermaid containers.. square or rectangle ones are ideal, you can even put heaters and small azoo filters on them, but any will do in a pinch. They're safe and can take the weight of the water. A large one (hopefully that's who the storage bins are made by) could be used to house all 3 fish. I'd just clean them real quick with hot water and a clean wash cloth, pour that water out and fill up whatever you use with treated water of about 65F.

Hope the little guys make it thru the night. I know you've done the best you can for them, so they've got a fighting chance.

I brought the two who made it through the night back to the pet store. One didn't seem so good, but the other (the one in the smallest little bowl, strangely) seemed great. Hopefully they will get good homes, or at least will have a nice big place to live out their lives. It's better than they would have been just abandoned in their bags I guess.

speaking of....
well, i dont know what it was that reminded me of this,
but i was at walmart buying feeders for my oscars,a nd the lady said that i cant buy them,
i have to be with a parent or 18+
i asked her why, she said some kids bought a bunch of gold fish, and threw them away,(they found them the day before that in the trash)
whats rong with today?
every kid thinks its cool to be cruel,
im ashamed with my generation.

Not nice that she suspected you, but it's cool that she cared enough about her goldfish to say no. I'll bet you most of them couldn't care less.

Not that I approve of kids buying the fish just to kill them in a mean way, but she did understand that they are feeder fish right? I mean apples to apples here, they are going to be fed to another fish. It's not like their life expectancy was really long anyway. Yeah I'd be upset too, but that wouldn't justify not selling someone else the fish. It's like taking checks as a method of payment. Yeah some people are going to write bad checks, but if you still want to allow people to pay that way, then you have to deal with the occational bad check. So either stop selling feeder fish completely or deal with the bad apples.

Well dying as a feeder fish is not quite as pointless and cruel as dying for the pleasure of some twisted kid.

Like I said, I think it's annoying if you get refused fish because someone is really paranoid and untrusting, but I am happily surprised that she even cared.

Ugh.* ** I was doing some fish browsing yesterday afternoon, and these two guys came up and were looking at the goldfish.*

Guy #1:* "I should buy one of those goldfish and put it in my girlfriend's bathtub."

Guy* #2:* "She'd freak!"

Guy #1:* "I know, it would be funny!!!"

Guy #2:* "What would you do with it then?"

Guy #1:* "If she didn't want to keep it, we could just flush it.* It's only a few bucks."

Thankfully, they just walked off.
