Re: Fiddler Crabs

Here's a couple that I found to get you started. Google "fiddler crabs" and you'll find those and a lot of others.

Re: Fiddler Crabs

Thank you, but i tried those and couldn't find what i was looking for. So i guess i'll just post it. My fiddler crab, whom i've had for 2 weeks (my first), was "foaming" (bubbles like soap) and rubbing it on himself. I assumed some sort of cleaning? or maybe preparing to molt? Wanted to make sure it's not the water.

Re: Fiddler Crabs

This foaming behavior has been reported for a number of crab species and can used to reduce body temperature. It is possible that it could reduce heating rates on warm days with low relative humidity. Fiddler crabs (Uca species) are able to maintain a body temperature below that of the surrounding air by changing posture, blanching, and evaporating water from the body surface.

It sounds like he was reducing his body temp. how warm is his area?

Re: Fiddler Crabs

Ah thanks, that is one thing i didn't find anywhere. I know the temp of the water is right around 75 - 78 deg F. Although his "perch" is near the light at the top of the tank and it was a very dry day. Those things combined, along with the info you provided leads me to believe that he was indeed cooling off. I'm not sure of the temp of the air, maybe i should invest in another thermometer.

Thanks Again.
