Zebra danio

I am a beginner in tropial fish, starting with a 29 gallon tank. Tank has been cycled and started with 6 long fined zebro danio. Added 6 sepra tetra which are doing well. One danio died. Noticed a few days ago that danio's were fin nipping..to the point one has almost no tail fin at all. So I went and got 3 more danios. Tank has 8 danios but the fin nipping is still going on any suggestions on how to stop this!!
Thanks

Re: Zebra danio

does it seem like all of the danios are nipping, just a few or just one? do they target whatever tetra is nearby or go after a specific one? the tetras may need to be seperated and treated with vitachem and novaqua+ or stresscoat to recover from the damage.. do you have another tank? maybe a tank divider if not? that would be less expense than another tank. i'd seperate them until the cause of their behavior is clear. i wish i could tell you that, but i don't have danios and am not a real expert on their behavior.

Re: Zebra danio

The danio's are not nipping the tetras.....they are nipping each other....one of the danio's looks a little differant than the others...maybe spotted instead of striped would that mean anything??

Re: Nipping

Are they all nipping? If it's just one or two, remove them. Schooling nippers doesn't always reduce nipping.
Maybe a few are just meanies and enjoy it a lil to much.
If it's all of em, might want to try a different fish.

Do you have pics? if there's a danio with no buddies of his time, that could be setting off his behavior and causing a chain reaction. you could try seperating him from the rest and see if things get any better.

you might also want to post a question in the Danio family forum (Cyprinids). http://www.fishlore.com/Forum/93-cyprinids/index.0.html
Also a good site is: http://www.danios.info/home.asp.

Re: Nipping

You might try taking them out of the tank and rearranging it a bit before putting them back in. There is guarantee it will work, but if this is territorial behavior, it will wipe the slate clean and nobody in there will have turf they feel they have to defend anymore.

Re: Zebra danio

Cindy I merged your two topics so all the responses would be in one place and since there wasn't an iD issue. Hope you don't mind
