JIM~ question on Angels and female betta

Hi Jim
I read on another post that you are an expert on Angel fish. I have two good size in my 29g tank with six serpae tetras. All is fine. I have a small female betta that I would like, if I could introduce to the 29g tank. Can you tell me if the Angel fish will bother the betta or the other way around? thanks, kate

Re: JIM~ question on Angels and female betta

wow, I don't know that I'd call myself an expert...lol. But thanks for the compliment. To answer your question, I'm honestly not sure. I only had a betta in my angel tank for a couple days and then moved ihim into a little tank of it's own. But for those couple days they seemed to get along fine. As far as I know, male bettas only really fight other male bettas. I don't think female bettas are nearly as agressive. I think your bigger problem might be the angels if they've gotten territorial about their tank.
I do know that bettas don't need much space, so if it was me I'd quarenteen her first, then introduce her to the tank, but keep something nearby (like a big goldfish bowl), just in case, and see how it goes. If they get along then cool, if not then get the betta out of there before she gets hurt and either get her a tank of her own or take her back to the pet store.

Re: JIM~ question on Angels and female betta

I agree with Jim. Technically it's not recommended but I have a male betta in my 29 with a pair of mated angels and they get along fine. My betta has his territory at the top and my angels have there territory and they don't bother each other, no nipped fins either.

btw: Congratulations on a new ranking Jim, your an angel expert

Re: JIM~ question on Angels and female betta

<ahem>... could it have been another Jim hehehe....
Thanks for your advice. My female betta, Precious has had her own tank and doing very well. My problem was that I brought home another male yesterday and decided that I didnt want to put him in the 10g divided tank near the other male betta. Where I had a dwarf gourami that was getting moved to my friends tank today. Now I have put Precious in the 10g divided tank and the new male is now in Precious old tank. All are doing well. Thanks for letting me know if they got along ok and your experiances with them together.
When I floated the bag with the male yesterday in the 29g tank, He was definatly flaring up and did not look too happy at the Angels that came to check him out. The Angels also looked a litttle bit nervous, it was then that I decided I would not put the betta in with them. I had a male betta in with other fish in my community tank before the Angels came and he got along fine with everyone but the dwarf gouarmi. I guess I shouldnt chance bringing him back in there now at this point tho.
Thanks, ~ kate

Re: JIM~ question on Angels and female betta

I would be more concerned about the Serpae Tetras myself since they are known to be a little nippy. I have kept Bettas in the 75G with angels and there wasn't a problem but he had plenty of floating plants to hide/rest in. It depends on the angels also some are more aggressive than others. Our koi angels were so mellow but the Black Lace were pure evil incarnate

Re: JIM~ question on Angels and female betta

yeah, Carol is right... I didn't think about the serpae's. You have a little school, so they should be cool, but keep an eye on them, just in case...
