Re: this is horrible

Ugly lil monsters. That is why people want them.

It's only illegal if you get caught. Unless you have coppers coming in and out of your house looking at your tanks, you'll be fine.

Unless a crazy ex just rats you out, cuz she's that kinda woman.

Re: this is horrible

I can't even click on those links.* I know know why, but I watched a video of a mouse being eaten by a piranha last week (maybe it's that one), and it broke my heart to see the mouse swimming frantically in a desperate attempt to escape.* I don't know about piranhas, so if they really do need live mouse in their diet, at least try to have the pirannhas put it out of its misery ASAP.* Don't just toy with it and enjoy the show for your own amusement.* * I used to have a pet mouse, he was such a sweetheart, I have such a soft spot for them.

I've seen some really disturbing YouTube vids.* There was one where these guys bought a couple bettas and put them in the same tiny cup to fight to the death..and would you believe that the video got even worse than that* I reported it and got it removed though.* Still doesn't change what happened to the poor fish, but at least they aren't getting their jollies by sharing it on YouTube.

aww poor betta. the thing is pirannas are slow killers. they'll pick at you and pick at you, unless the victim is really small they dont just rip of its head and its done. they like slowly pick parts off, cuz thats how they do it, they have small mouths so.

Re: this is horrible

There probably is no way to really have the piranha eat the mouse in a "humane" way, I guess.* * Even just some tongs to hold it in place though so that the piranha's could just come up and get him right away, so he wouldn't have to swim and struggle in a futile attempt to escape?* Ugh, I feel nasty even saying stuff like that though, and it still just sounds awful.

I mean, I know that, for example, snakes need mice, and that's just part of nature, but there's just something about this mouse/piranha thing that seems so unnecessary and wrong.* Like I said though, I'm not familiar with the diet of piranhas.* * Do they even need mice?* Do they have to still be alive?* Couldn't the mice at least have his neck snapped first so that he dies right away?* Um, not that that really makes me feel better about the whole thing, but I think you get what I mean.* *

yea pirannhas dont need mice.. i think the nicest thing to feed them would be feeder fish...thats what they're for. I mean personally it just makes no sense to me, because i like mice better then pirranhas they are cuter, nicer, and i think they're smarter. so if i new of a pirannha that ate a mouse once a week well i would think that was a waste of mice.

Re: this is horrible

i'd tend to think that piranhas and mice don't occupy the same areas, one being in water, and the other not

Re: this is horrible

What is the difference between this and feeding goldfish to oscars? Rats and mice to snakes? To sensationalize it is wrong. But there is no difference when it comes to feeding live food to carnivores.

As for mice and piranha occupying the same areas? Mice do drink water......

do you even know what we were talking about. feeding mice to pirannhas . that is my opinion anyway. and i think you can sensationalize things like this. for instance to me personally i would rather feed a aunt to my snake, then a deer to a wolf. if i had the wolf and snake as pets

Ummmmm Yeah - I do know what you're talking about..Could you figure out what the relation mice to water and Piranha is Piranha are meat eaters and they don't care what kind it is......If they could get mice, squirrels or cattle in the wild, they'll eat it and they do. If they're hungry enough the'll eat anything that comes into their path. You have a problem with it and you're entitled to that opinion. As I am to mine. I have a problem with it being put on the web to sensationalize. But the fact of the matter is, snakes need live food. While you'd rather feed you aunt to a snake - which is akin to murder - I see nothing wrong with feeding a rat or mouse - which overbreed readily to feed a pet.

i didnt say there was a realtion to mice and water. i said in later posts i know this is hoe they eat . it is how they were made to be carnivores just like we are. It is also just my opinion to not like them and think theyre not worth the life* of a mouse. maybe the mouse should eat the piranna instead. And i meant ant not aunt. i dont know too me the smarter species deserves to prevail. Thats why i dont care if a snake has a ant, but a piannha has a mouse/ or rat. its not really sensationalizing just looking at the point. pirannas should not even be eating rats and mice because many carry diseases and intoxications which are not meant for pirannas, also resulting in the pirannhas intoxication and ultimate death being a waste of time, money, mouse and fish. So if you really want to side with the owner be my guest.

Re: this is horrible

I didn't have a problem feeding rats to my python when I had it... so I guess it's more or less the same to feed one to piranha. But I'm pretty sure piranha will eat meat live or not, so I suppose I'd just feed them a nice hunk of steak instead. Besides, I agree with lolagirl, you never know what disease a feeder rat (or feeder fish) might have.

Re: this is horrible

i'm with Jim, a hunk of meat would make them as happy as watching them rip some living bit by bit to pieces until it died. you could probably get 'leftovers' from a butcher too. i'm not sure if that might introduce the possibility of disease or not, but it could be a relatively cheap source of food for the piranha that could be stored and used as needed. no trips back & forth to the pet store using up $27/gal gas plus feeding and cleaning up after live food.

and this is a matter oof opinion. i dont know if its because im just not a experienced fish keeper but even if i was i could never do this
I must agree with you. I was a believer in feeder fish & I do have piranhas. The fact is that they will & can be taught to eat a wide range of non-live foods. I did do the feeder gold fish thing, but the video you speak of is way un-called for. That's just mean. There's also one where soebody did body piercings on their Oscar. There's some sick dudes out there! & I wasn't aware that people were tossing live hampsters & what not to their fish...What the F***!

Re: this is horrible

Plenty of people who enjoy animal cruelty. we see some of them on the news when animals aren't enough for them. I'd prefer to feed them fresh meat scraps myself or at least dead animals (like zoological parks do with their carnivores). they'll be as happy and fed.

I didn't say you said there was a relation to mice and water, I did and I guess you missed it. As far as mice and rats go, the piranha doesn't know the difference and store bought mice typically don't carry disease. In fact the're quite the opposite. Only in the wild with they carry disease. If the piranha are hungry, they will eat it not knowing or caring if their food source is diseased or not. Part of feeding live food to these animals is that this is as close to their natural habits as it gets......If you really want to get technical about things, we feed our fish flaked food and dried food which is made up of a number of plants, animals, whatever. We deprive them of their natural feeding habits which is to eat live food....Eggs, fry insects, etc....We should feed them live foods since this is what they would be accustomed to. I don't have a problem with feeding piranha live food. I have a problem with the person sensationalizing it on the web whiich is another point you seem to have missed. As far as the smarter species prevailing, if the mouse drinks in piranha infested waters and gets eaten by the piranha, which is the smarter species? The answer is neither. The mouse (unless he is conditioned to know that the water is dangerous to drink from) needs to drink - so he goes to that body of water. On the other hand, the piranha needs to eat.....If the mouse is the closest food source, chances are pretty good that he'll be eaten.....It's nothing more than nature taking its course. As far as carnivorous snakes go, they don't eat ants and they don't eat dead food......There is no choice but to feed them live food.

I guess my heart doesn't bleed as much as some others.....

i guess we're gonna have to agree to disagree.lol. but im sure we can both agree on (which is the start of the topic) that feeding an expensive endangered species to pirannhas is probably crossing the line a bit trying to get people ****ed off. As far as the snakes go, yea I dont have a clue what they eat.lol. I was just trying to make a point. If you think about most people sensationalize about their animals...and just like pirannhas diet is just their nature..thats just ours. Like i said in another post a guy i knew killed bunnies but also had a pet bunnie. When i asked him how he could shoot them , but love the one he owned, he simply replied oh those are wild. Oh well point is pirannhas shouldnt be eating arrowanas!
