I am cyclying my tank..

So here's my dilemma... I am cycling my tank and Im pretty sure that I'm at the end where my Nitrite levels are high. I have 8 red eye tetras in my 55 gallon tank. I added bio spira almost a week ago.
So I guess my question is.. what should I do to prevent my fish from possibly dying. They seem to be fine, they look a little jittery but they are eating and playing. Is there anything I can do to help them stay alive?

Re: I am cyclying my tank..

I see in your sig that you have a 30g.. is that the tank that you're cycling or is it the 55g? How long has the tank you're cycling been running and when did you add the fish? What do you treat your tap water with & are your ammonia & nitrites at 0 with nitrates at 20 or less? Fish can be a little stressed at a new environment, but if they're eating & playing that's good - are they showing any signs of disease that you're concerned about?

Re: I am cyclying my tank..

If you're nervy about the the water quality for the fish, do a water change -- if you're *really* nervy about the water quality, remove the fish from the tank in some of their original water, do a large water change, and then drip acclimate them just as if they were brand new fish.

But without knowing your testing results, it's hard to know if you really need to do that, or not.

I envy you having two tanks -- it would be so easy to clone off a bit of your existing bio filter by sticking a little sponge filter in the cycled tank for a few days, then moving it the new one.
