foggy for the fish!

i've just set up my new tank and as its much bigger than the last tank and therefore has much more gravel, it also seems so much cloudier! the other tank was only cloudy for a few hours. this has been cloudy all day (which for impatient old me is a lifetime!). its like condensation or thick fog. want to put plants in, in a few days (when they arrive!) but if its like this i wont be able to see what i'm doing! it really is that bad!

filter is on as a figured that may help clear it. switched it off for a few hours this afternoon leaving gravity to do its thing and pull all the suspended bits down and i thought the filter might be stirring it up and aggravating the situation, but then switched it on again as it made no difference!

so......question is....how long did your tanks take to clear? and should i be doing anything? it looks like a tank of skimmed milk!!!

Re: foggy for the fish!

ok, so what size is the tank, is it cycled? if not, what are you using to cycle it? you MUST leave the filter and heater on at all times, as the beneficial bacteria builds up in the filter media as the water flows through it, and keep your heater around 80 degrees. it could take anywhere from 2 weeks, to 2-3 months for it to fully cycle and clear up.

Re: foggy for the fish!

yip agreed with jmatt, my 67g tank took 18 days to clear completely up. they say it is extremely common in newly cycling tanks to be a little cloudy for the duration also . hang in there. this gives you time to do a bit of research. draw a diagram of where you want your plants. have a cup of tea or three.

i was fretting just like you but now i see the clarity that is clear, crystal clear, water.

good luck keep us posted
