Can you tell the difference between a male ram cichlid and a female?

I am planning to buy 3 Rams, and I am not quite sure but I think males are more colorful than females The best ratio to keep Rams is to have 2 females for every male. Good luck

I haven't any experience with rams but a book that I have says that 'The male is distinguished by the elongated stripes at the base of its dorsal fin'. Hope it helps.

Butterfly

The first ray of the males dorsal fin is usually longer. The female usually has a little violet or a rosy color on their tummy especially at breeding time.
