Cichlids... Convict or Jack Dempsey?

Hi.
I'm not new to fish keeping, but I saved a bunch of Cichlids from a pet shop remodelling. Got them for nothing, but had to quickly get a 55 gallon tank together to keep them in.
Now the situation is not perfect, and I know its only temporary until I can afford another 55g set up.
I have various types of Cichlids, both African and American, and they seem to be doing well together, but I know they're still young (about inch to two inches long).
THE BIG QUESTION IS.... I have 'normal' Jack Demspeys, which I've identified easily, that are very slightly banded in vertical grey stripes, but I have a couple of real black banded ones that look like convicts, but STILL have the Jack dempsey spots and fluorescent dashes.
So... is this just older fish? or a cross strain?
I have to say... I just joined the fishlore site, and its the best on the web.

every fish has its own unique markings, it could just be that the colours are more vibrant in the couple that have darker stripes, i have 3 red tail calico platies ( orange or red tail with black spots and white bodies) two have them have a very bright red tail, once them is more faded
