Yikes! Tank Cracked! :(

I woke up this morning, checked on the babies.... the guppies were roaming around the top and the tetra's were hangin out at the bottom. Fed them a little, and then went to make breakfast and read the paper.

Returned later to find water running down the front of the tank stand. Immediately grabbed some towels and threw them down, and started to remove water from the tank. To make a long story short, the bottom of the tank has a crack that runs the length of the tank. The carpeting underneath is soaked.

I've moved the fish to a big 5 gallon bucket and stuck the heater in it. Now I get to take the tank back and deal with PetSmart about it since I havent had it that long.

Anyone else had anything similar happen?

I've been lucky and haven't had a tank crack or leak on me, knock on wood. Before you run out to get a new tank see if you can keep filter running on the bucket too so you keep your biological filtration alive.

Re: Yikes! Tank Cracked! :(

Make sure the filter is running all this time! Put the filter on a bucket with water (use only dechlorinated water, or tank water if you have any left). If the filter isn't too powerful, keep it on the 5 gallon bucket with fish, so that they have filtered water until you get the new tank. Show your receipt at the store, and they HAVE TO give you a new tank. I think every glass tank should have at least a one-year warranty against leakage. Once they give you the new tank, simply put all the gravel and decor back in, fill it with water, and put the filter back on. Then slowly acclimatize the fish. You need to acclimatize them because you'll be putting them in a tank with 100% new water. You do know how to acclimatize, right?

P.S. Did you have any styrofoam sheet between your stand and your tank? A tank usually needs some "cushioning" - this should help prevent cracking. Get a styrofoam sheet this time, if you didn't have it before, and cushion it between the tank's bottom trim and the stand.
