Is there...?

Is there any type of bottom-dwelling scavenger/algae eater that you all would recommend?

I have tried snails, and they seem to dislike my water, or something, because they survive for a couple weeks and them simply dissintigrate. I have hard water, and my guess is they don't like it much.

I have tried ghost shrimp, but after my last vacuuming they have disappeared.

So, any suggestions? My tank has a little room.

Reminder, I have a 10 gallon tank.

Thanks.

Re: Is there...?

Refresh my memory. What fish do you have in that tank? Is it cycled? How long have you had it set up? What are your ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels?

Corydoras catfish and Bristle-nosed/Bushy-nosed catfish are what I would recomend.

Re: Is there...?

It would be good if you answered Gunnie's questions because if your tank is pretty much fully stocked, you cannot get a larger algae eater. Even if it were not very stocked, I wouldn't recommend a larger algae eater. Brisntelnoses and Siamese Flying Foxes are very good algae eaters, but they grow to 5-6" and a fish of this size (in my opinion) wouldn't have enough room to swim comfortably in a 10 gallon tank. I believe it would feel very confined. Plus, Flying Foxes are very fast swimmers. Otos, on the other hand, are very small AND very good algae eaters. The only things about them are that they need to be in groups and that they need a good water quality as well as a good diet.
