Aquarium buddies for Red Tailed Shark

I'm planning another aquarium and im gunna get a 30-40 gallon tank for a red tailed shark. I'm just thinking what other fish "buddies" i coud put in there. I know red tails are quite aggressive, do you think a silver/bala shark would be a bad idea? What would be an ideal partner? Cheers x

Actually, i have noticed that a lot of my friends keep them with Discus fish.

From the redtails I have kept though, I would not put them with smaller or timid fish or fish that have long tails or fins.

Re: Aquarium buddies for Red Tailed Shark

I have 2 tanks w/ red tail sharks. One tank has peaceful schooling and the sharks goes about his business with no problem on either side.my next tank has kinda agressive fish...tiger barbs znd a betta along with 2 silverdollar and 4 lg goruamis. 1st tank is 55 gal and 2nd tank is 75 gal. They all getalong but I am sure the size of the tank does help piece or war.The red tail shark is my favorite fish so i watcvh him close. I once added a rainbow shark to my 1st tand and jack (RTS) did notlike that one bit. He got real stressed, lost his color and became a coward..I took rainbow back to ltf and jack was his old self in 2-3 days...My recommendation would be to keep each tank to one type of shark..but the rest of his mates should just well if the tank isnt tosmall...Hope that helps.

Re: Aquarium buddies for Red Tailed Shark

personaly i think clown loaches are the best tank mates for a red tail shark..i have 5 clowns and 1 rtbs and the shark is always hanging around with the clowns,so much so i think the shark thinks he is a clown loach, because he has started doing things that the clowns do ..like the clown dance lol .. so as long as the tank is big enough then i would highly recomend clown loaches..i think it keeps the sharks natural aggresivness at bay too.. .. hope that helps..
