Penguin 150 in 19 gal hex

Kinda self explanatory. I have a Penguin 150(30gal) in a 19 gallon hex tank. I have neons cherry brabs and a honey gourami. I have a bottle cut in half that acts as a buffer to slow the flow. The problem is it makes it fairly loud. If i remove it will it stress the fish out. There does seem to be quiet a current without it.

Is there a flow adjustment on top? If not you could attach a piece of sponge across the out flow lip to cut the flow down.

Everyone ive talked to says to have double the filtration as the size of your tank...which would ok with the one you have...id take out the bottle, and just watch the fish ..if you think they are struggling, figure out something or maybe put a sponge on the overflow or a cloth of some kind to slow it a bit...

mine makes an unholy noise as well, and together with folks on here we found out that it was the wheel splashing as it spun, not the actual outlet. If you take the wheel out and run the filter, does it still make too much noise?

This isn't a solution as it defeats the purpose of the filter, but if the answer to the above is "no," you may want to start looking for a different filter. I tried everything to quiet mine down but once i discovered the noise was the wheel itself, there's no solution other than replacement.

My filter is actully fairly quite. If I have JUST the filter with no bevel it is quiet. It is only after I put the bevel on it that it makes all the noise. So I did take it off and it did quiet it down. Now I can see that the fish actually have to swim to stay still in the front of the hex tank.

An example of this, is now when I feed the fish the food doesn't float down if it is at the front of the tank. Instead it gets caught in the current and is pushed down and circles to the back.

The Penguin 150 has an adjustable middle intake, have you tried closing the middle intake so that the heavier part of the current is directed further to the bottom of the tank? That might help your upper and midrange swimmers.
I have a Penguin 150 in my 25 gal. and a 200 in my 30 gal. and like them very much. They were fairly inexpensive, which is always one of my considerations, simple to operate and find parts and cartridges for, and I thought the wheel was a cool idea for more bacteria growth. The bio-wheel doesn't make a noise on either of mine other than a little splashing of the water that I find very pleasant...that might irritate somebody else.
