Will this be a good combo?
5 Danios
1 Dwarf Gourami
a pair of Blue Rams or Bolivian rams
6 assorted corycats
for my 20g
it sounds overstocked but allexperts suggested it would work...
Any ideas out there?

I don't know but I have a 20 gal and they aren't that big once you put the fish in there. Good luck

Hello kacie, I moved your thread from the 'forum issues log' to the' freshwater beginners' where you will more than likely get more responses.
You are right IMO in suspecting that this combo sounds overstocked. I believe that it is. I also think that the danio's who are known fin nippers would be a problem for your D. Gourami. Also looking at 6 cory cats and a pair of the rams all of which prefer the lower region of the tank would be pretty crowded in a 20g tank.

Thanks for moving me. What would you add to a 20g with 3 danios, 1 Dwarf Gourami and 1 Cory? The danios and d.Gourami are fine together so far. I need more of the cory and danios but how many and could I squeeze in one more "pretty" fish?

The first fish that came to my mind when you said pretty fish and inhabits the mid to top area and goes well with others was an angelfish. But i'm sure people will tell you that danios tend to nip fins if not in groups of 6 or more. I wold put 3 more cories + an angel or a small shoal of glowlight tetras. They are very attractive in a shoal and super easy to care for. But that's just me

6 good sized corys on their own would fully stock that tank.

In my 20 gal, my Dwarf gourami is the "pretty fish" main attraction!

You could have 3 corys and some tetras. I like neons personally, and there is a beautiful golden tetra that's very nice. It's best to stay away from certain laterally compressed species, like Serpaes and Skirts, since they do nip fins.

If you want rams, you'll have to forget most of the other fish, except for maybe some tetras. Cichlids are highly territorial and aggressive when spawning and need lots of room.

An angelfish grows too big and may very well fight with the gourami since both are territorial.

Angels are usually only aggressive when spawning and from my experience, dwarf gouramis are very peaceful. But hey, you probably know more than I do.

Yeah I thought it sounded crazy overstocked. My original plan was 3-6 cory, 1 Dwarf Gourami and 5-6 danio but I thought that might be too many and the d.Gourami was so colorful I wanted just one more colorful fish and was researching everywhere for one. I asked allexperts for stocking advice and that was his answer. All the fish plus two chiclids. I would love chiclids but had ruled them out as too advanced for me.

Cichlids aren't necessarily "advanced," but they are usually not good community fish. They are best kept with their own kind, in sometimes mind-bogglingly complex combinations. Their care is not really that difficult (well, most species), but you have to get the right ones in the right setup.

You are getting great advice here, so I will leave it at that.

what about a few male fancy guppies with the danios??

although from what your saying, you probabally want a 'bigger' centre piece fish...Personally I'd leave just three cories, giving you extra inches for new fish...
