my guppies think they are salmon

I have a 25g tank - set up about 7 weeks ago - with guppies, rosie's and a couple of neons. These fish were previously in a smaller tank. I've had most of the guppies for about a year. All of the guppies are at the top of the tank and they swim into the flow of water coming out of either the filter or bubbler. They look like spawning salmon. Is this normal? They have also been dying - I pull a couple out of the tank every morning and night. I've had my water tested and told is was perfect. Its only the guppies that are dying.

Any ideas?

Hi Welcome to Fish Lore.

I'm sorry your guppies aren't doing well.

First a few questions so the members can try and help you.

When you say your water is perfect, what are the exact readings for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates?
What kind of test are you using?

How many of each kind of fish?

Thanks for replying.
I took a water sample into my local fish store - where I've been getting my fish recently (none of them have died yet). She used a multi trip test and told me my water was fine - no numbers.

I have 3 Rosie, 2 neons, and about 25 guppies (mostly small ones). I also have 2 loaches. Is that too many for this tank?

Your welcome.
I'd suggest you get yourself a test kit. The API master kit is very reliable. The strips aren't very accurate and stores are notorious for just saying 'the water is fine'

Your tank is overstocked, you either need a larger tank or find a new home for some of them.

So, not knowing the numbers, I'd do a good water change, like 50%and add some aeration to the tank. I's suspect you have ammonia readings.

What's the temperature of the water?

I have already given away some of the babies, and i have someone willing to take more.

I will have to seperate the females i think. The water temp is 79. I have added another bubbler (i use those blue stones, can't think what they're called). I changed about 20% of the water a couple of days ago and again last night. It seems to have helped a little. But they still like to hang out in front of the bubbler.

I will invest in a test kit - i have the sticks as well, but they are not very helpful. I guess i will have to do a little reading on what the numbers mean.

Thanks again for your help.

lol, maybe they just like it there.

The API master kit is recommended by a lot of members and very reliable. It can be pricey, but it lasts a while.

In your aquarium profile you said you didn't know about the nitrogen cycle. heres some information that will help you learn about it and understand the numbers we are asking for/you are going to be getting when you test.
