feeding fish

hi all,
im currently feeding fish twice a week. I know ithis sounds inhumane, but i was having trouble with my water settings and this amount of feeding seems to be bringing all readings into spec! However, im worried that this will harm my fish in the longer term. Any advice please

that seems like too little ...what water problems have you been having? IMO fish need to eat once a day minimum..but everyone has an opinion and a way of doing things

What type and brand of fish food are you using? If you are using pellets make sure you have the smallest ones, the neons would likely have some trouble with anything over 1mm in diameter; if flakes ignore this info.

How much fishfood do you feed them with? Although it seems to be a good idea to let the fish fasten for a day or maybe two per week, feeding two times each seven days is likely to be health threatening for them.

If your readings are actually the ones in your aquarium info then you are still cycling (ammonia present at 0.5ppm and a spike in nitrites indicates you are in the second phase of the nitrogen cycle).

Consider daily water changes (close to 50%), and using a water conditioner that locks ammonia and nitrites within non-lethal levels -the only safe level is zero- but that won't prevent nitrifying bacteria to colonize your tank, such as Seachem's Prime, should help your crew survive.

What are your nitrates readings? I guess still close to zero, but once you see them approaching 10-25ppm, your cycle will be ending.

hi pepe/shawnie
thanx for your response
all readings are now 0ppm. Had a few spikes of ammonia (0.25) but after a few water changes these readings came back to 0. Feeding fish only with flakes and dried bloodworm.

If ALL your readings are 0ppm, you aren't cycled yet -- nitrAtes should be showing something in a cycled tank.

I agree with kelly...your water issues are from a lack of cycle not feedings.....daily water changes of at least 50% a day with some prime will finish up that cycle...then feed small amounts (fishies bellys are the size of ONE of their eyes) at least once a day, twice is better in their opinions

think about it this way: in the wild, they would fast for a day and then eat and then eat and then fast adn then eat and eat and eat...etc. try to feed them at least 4 times a week, different food each day if possible, and skip a few days randomely each week. no more than two in a row fasting. remember in fish tanks we are trying to mimic the wild...aka perfect environments except 4 predators
