They usually dont eat for a while after you put them in anyway... just a question though, how long did you acclimate them and how??

i acclimated them by leaving them in the bag for 5 minutes getting them used to temperature and then i plopped em in not with the fish store water and ive let them be. how do i tell if my fish are gasping for air.

You should really acclimate them for at least 15 minutes, also you should add a few tablespoons of YOUR water into the water in the bag so they get used to any differences in pH or other parameters. Adding them after only 5 minutes and not putting any of your water into the bag for them to get used to means that they potentially go into shock when you release them into your tank, which is probably why the one died. You also should NEVER put water from the bag they come in into your tank, it could possibly have parasites or other harmful things in it that youre putting in your tank! Gasping for air means they are sitting at the top of the water with their mouth opening and closing (looks similar to when they eat food from the surface)

Breeding them would not be a bad idea for 2 reasons...

A) You stocking plan is 3 platys 3 corys. Platys need a 1 male 2/3 female ratio if you are keeping them together. Because you have 2 males - you don't have space.
B) You will need several fry raising tanks!

It is simplest for a begginer to leave breeding to when they have had a bit of experience IMO.

Here is a link on how to aclimatize your fish: http://www.fishlore.com/acclimating-tropicalfish.htm
