| dead fish hi there!
my tank is up and running 3 months now and everything seemed to be going great until last week! All my water checks were spot on (zero ammonia, nitrite and nitrates), but then i noticed 1 of my marble angels acting strange and when i came down next morning, there was no sign of him at all! I cant imagine the other fish would have eaten him so quick! Anyhow, i carried out a few water changes after the angels disappearing act and checked the water which still appear to be fine. Then last night i have 3 rummy-nosed tetras die overnight! Cannot figure it out. I carried out another watercheck and if anything the ammonia may be 0.25ppm but nitrite and nitrates are bioth 0ppm and also carried out another waterchange. Anyone any ideas on my sudden bad luck and where the **** has my angel gone?
Thanx |

| Sorry about your fish. Did you take apart the whole tank? Sometimes angelfish like to hide a little too well when they are sick. How big are your angels...young ones are much more sensitive to water changes and illness. Unfortunately,
Angelfish are fussy creatures and get sick out the blue especially if they came from a shop. Not home tank bred. |

| I had the same thing happen last week to one of my angels. I searched the entire tank and turned up nothing. I figure he died and was scavenged. I lost 3 angels in a 2 day span. I was in the same boat of you. All readings seem fine, so it was either a parasite or stress. |

| When in doubt... it usually is a parasite which brings on a bacterial infections, which then could kill the fish.
I had brought a really nice 4" male koi with the dark reddish orange, bright white an d black coloring home when I first got into angels...from an aquarium club member. He looked fine but by the am he was face down in the corner. I was so mad, Koi angelfish are hard to come by especially with that color orange. It was stress from the tank change....Bonus the girl refunded me my money. |

| With 0's for all your readings, I'm wondering if your tank's cycled.
There should be some nitrates.
What're using to test? If you're using the strips, they're not very accurate. |

| sorry for the loss of your fishies I agree with lucy..for some reason the tank is in a mini cycle... angels are very very sensitive...as far as dissapearing, what others are in the tank?
I would do daily water changes and treat the tap water with prime..it will lock down your ammonia for 24 hours until the next change... |

| ammonia poison can kill them days later with little signs if any. |

many thanks for your replies
had slight readings of about 5ppm nitrates, and im sure the tank has cycled. Unfortunately had another platy die today, so have carried out further water changes. Having a run of bad-luck it seems |

| how is the pH? 7.0?
with so many water changes it might be real low.acidic? |

| If the tank is cycled and it wasnt ammonia and nitrites that killed them, I'd go for a parasitic infection.
I really dont think ph is the cause. Fish can get used to many ranges of PH... unless there was a drastic and huge change which I dont think. |

| ph has been around 7.5-8.0, so quite sure this is not what caused my fish to die.
Hopefully things have settled!
Have only 1 rummy-nosed tetra now left, and i know they prefer to live with at least another couple of their own. The problem i have is i dont want to add any other fish till i get tank settled. You reckon this rummy-nose going to be alright on his own for a while?
Thanx again |
