It also came with a heater, HOB filter & gravel that I won't be using. What can I use to disinfect the tank, filter & heater?

Some ppl use 1 parts bleach to 19 parts water..then use a water conditioner to neautralize the chlorine..like prime or some other choice....I like the hot hot water and vinegar method myself...what will you stock it with?

Either method Shawnie suggested will work. Two others are: ammonia (do this outside, as ammonia mixing with organic matter can produce chlorine gas), or peroxide, either of which you can leave in the tank. The ammonia will just help with the cycle, while the peroxide will dissolve into oxygen.

I personally like the bleach method...It kills EVERYTHING....lol Just be sure to really overdose it with chlorine remover. I just use the real cheap stuff for that as you only want to neutralize the chlorine and no need to get the stress coat or expensive stuff. If it still smells like bleach it needs to rinse/soak in declor again.

Thanks everyone. I used the bleach method and it worked pretty good. I stil lhave to clean the tank some because the guy I got it from had it set up as a saltwater tank.

I will always bleach my tanks before setting them and in between illness.
You never know what happened in the tank before so it's better to be safe than sorry.
I use a scrub pad to get SW & hard water stains off...some time it take awhile to fade.
