I just recently got my betta (like two days ago) and for the moment have him in a small betta tank I got at wal-mart ($1, very proud of it). Anyway I have a juvinile red tail shark in my 2.5 gal aquarium and haven't been able to find a straight answer about weather red tails and betta's are compatible. Any idea's?

not likely, but i'm not an expert. and i highly doubt a $1 tank will fit the needs of your betta either. please read some of the betta start up articles.

Does your betta have everything a tropical fish needs? a heater, filter, decorations, at least 5 gallons of water? because the only place where you can get a tank with all that stuff for 1 dollar is a yard sale.

I acctually saw a 36 gall tank for 2 dollars yardsaling today, but mom said no ;(

Like I said the $1 tank is temporary. I tend to have rather poor luck with fish some days. So far the red tail is charmed so until I find out how the betta's luck runs he won't get an upgrade. (by the by the $1 tank is an ipond with one container of those waste absorbing crystals in it.)

At the moment my sharks maybe (if you stretch) 2 inches. and he's all alone and seems quite happy.

I would vote no to the compatibility. Red tails tend to be quick little swimmers & that may stress out the betta as they are slower, more graceful swimmers. Also the betta will have no where to go to in a small tank with the red tail.

bettas are very easy and hardy IF they have the proper tank setup. Usually they die due to neglection.

and by the way, How much water is in that iPond of yours? if not much just for now you might want to consider even a milkjug with the top cut off. that has more water than that iPond thing more than likely.

And those little crystals dont work. the only thing that can take out waste is a waterchange.

Red I owe you an apology. I'm sorry I was so harsh in my previous posts, I just want you to realize the bettas needs. Why dont you go to the betta section of the forum and look around at the pics of bettas and you will see how happy they are in the proper setup.

It's ok I'll forgive you. I've spent most of the afternoon googling all I can about betta's (did it for my red before I got him). I knew that they were pretty hardy that's why I wasn't too worried about him spending a few days in the cheap tank. I've been keeping a close eye on him and I'm pricing out a better home for him. But thanks for the concern.

really the best tank I can think of is a ten gallon kit from walmart. You would just need to get decorations substrate and a heater. the kit is about 30$ if I'm not mistaken.

I divided a 10 gal. for my 2 bettas. It may be a good solution for you.

I think that pet stores should stop selling Bettas in those little tubs, it gives people the incorrect impression, I have seen so many people keeping these beautiful fish in small tubs because they dont know any different... why are they allowed to do that? its seems inhumane to sell them shelved ontop of each other in small plastic tubs.....

Apparently it is en vouge these days to give Bettas in little bowls as place settings at wedding receptions.

Once I was at a birthday party when I was little and one of the prizes was a betta in a bowl. Back then I thought that was fine, but I realize now how horrid that is for the fish!
