What do fish see from inside the tank?

It's a silly question, and I've always wondered... What do fish see when the look out the aquarium?

Is it just a reflection of the inside of the tank? Is it just the room? ..etc?

I ask because I just put a new bulb in the cover of my 10 gallon tank. It's a fluorescent and it's a LOT brighter than the incandesent bulb that was in there. Now my betta is pacing up and down the side of the tank, flaring at his reflection!

Is he going to eventually figure out that it isn't another fish? Is it OK if he does a lot of flaring?

LOL my fish see a crazy chi dog chasing a rottie..plus tons of kids in and out!@!

and no its not good for him to flare alot..so if it continues, you may have to dim the light or go back to the less bright one...do you have backgrounds covers on the tank? that helps alot...goodluck!

I found that acrylic tanks actually look like a mirror from inside more so than the glass tanks I have. I had the same problem with a male betta going nuts when the room was dark and his tank light was on. I had to make sure the room light was on if the aquarium light was on. I helped but not 100%. I had a black background on the tank at the time also, so it could have had something to do with it I don't know so now it is home to a girl betta.

I don't know what my fish see from the tank, but I have noticed in one tank they run from my husband where when I get near the tank they are all up front lined up, of coarse they line up for the kids too. I think its where my husband is working a lot and not around the tanks to feed them and do the water changes.

There is one fish that will only come out for my husband though, its strange.

My Male Betta had the same problem, Calab. I have a 5g Hex tank and he was freaking out. Same idea, up and down the seams, flaring most of the time. I tried to put a background around 3 of the sides and that didn't help at all.

What I did find that helped were fake plants. I put two into his tank. These two covered the primary seams that he did his little act on. In addition, time helped. Just being patient and letting him get used to his home. He doesn't do it much anymore. From time to time he will if the ambient lights in the room are out and only his tank light is on, but even then not so much anyymore.

Hope that helps!

I know my betta watches TV, somethings catch her attention more than others.

I was feeding her last night, she usually waits around to see if she'll get extra, instead she got the last pellet and went rushing over to the otherside of the tank to watch a commercial

She has a fluorescent bulb in her 10g.
