| If the fish is dying there is a reason... do you want to introduce that to your body? If the cow begins to die of some illness are you still going to eat the meat?
It would be insanely unintelligent to eat any animal that died prematurely or of old age, unless you are trying to potentially win a Darwin Award.
By the way an oscar and jack dempsey probably will not survive together long enough to be big enough to eat. They tend to kill one another. |

There's something not right about eating a pet.
Thank you CWC for a reasonable explanation other than the ew factor. |

| On a serioius note, on most of the labels of the chemicals that you put in your tank it says not for human consumption, and something along the line of the fish you use this on is not for human consumption.
I also agree w/ CWC. |

| the oscar at work bites me all the time, I've been wanting to bite him back but I guess I shouldn't lol
ps the chemicals used in the aquaculture of fish for human consumption is different than those for ornamental purpose, in the USA the chemicals used for agricultural animals have to be approved by the usda... |

not to mention, any chemical introduced into a pond where fish meant for human consumption has to be approved through the FDA, so if any chemicals are used they are different than those we use in our tanks. Last edited by Angela_96; June 8th, 2008 at 11:35 PM.

| A lot of fish we keep as pets are used for food in their native countries, and Oscars are one of those, although they aren't farmed or raised as food.
Eating one's pets is frowned upon on this continent. |

Eating one's pets is frowned upon on this continent. | just as when I got attacked by a cat when I was 8 and had stiches up my arm, my family DOC was Koren and he told my mom she should fry the cat up for dinner "cats were good"... he wasn't kidding not only that they all wanted revenge on the stray cat that attacked me, all I was doing was putting food out for a stray and he attacked me (meat was hanging out of my arm) they did kill the cat because of the whole "rabies" issue to test it... (honestly this guy was the best family/kid doc I have ever seen and if I still lived back home I would take my children to him, he had made great friends w/ my parents because I grew up w/ his child and was good friends w/ him)
and there are countries that do not eat cattle, and frown upon us for eating them. |

Joe, feel free to pipe back up here!! MY impression is that he wasn't literally planning on getting some pets and (especially and specifically an oscar or jack d) and raising them as pets and then eating them! I feel like he was just asking if it's possible. |

I could be wrong.
Cattle raised for food are rarely treated as pets. |

| I knew a guy who had lived out west for awhile. He had bought a calf that he was going to raise to adulthood, then slaughter for meat.
Well his plans all went down the drain after his he, his wife and kids couldn't bring themselves to kill good ole Bessey and eat her.

| I'm giving away my age, but I saw the animated version of Charlotte's Web back in the '70's as well as the live action version from a couple of years ago.
I also read the book when I was a kid.

| I am actually troubled by America's duality regarding eating animals.
Dennis Leary has it right when he says we only want to save the cute animals.
However, I definitely wouldn't want to eat a fish that had just died in a tank. It's not the chemicals. In my opinion, if it's good enough for my pets, it had better be good enough for me. It's the fact that a fish that died early has died for a reason, as was said early in the thread, while a fish that died of old age is likely to have its own problems. |

(well at least I know we will be eating in our house) |

| Why just men?
Hunting is no longer a viable method of sustaining a population. We've grown larger than the world can sustain in this way. That's why we have to "cheat" nature by farming, which allows us to carefully control conditions and grow more prey animals than a given area would normally be capable of supporting.
I do garden. I only have a few veggies growing right now, but I plan to expand this each year until I can make it a summer without needing to buy veggies. |

It wasn't until after we had eaten that I found out though. |

| People talks about the bad economy, and I won't go too far being that it is kinda a side-track, but the economy ain't really that bad right now. It is still growing, just a bit slower than in previous years. It'll turn around just fine.
I am all for eatting animals and I even plan to in the next year or two get a chicken coop built and stock it with laying and roosting hens. The eggs will be eatten and hopefully the chickens will multiply enough to have home-grown rotisserie chickens each year. I wouldn't mind learning to hunt for meat also, and honestly, if our neighbors hadn't dammed up the creek that fed into our pond (causing it to dry out) we would have it stocked with fish that we could catch anytime we wanted them for dinner.. Animals, in my opinion, are part of the food chain and if I am hungry then I go to the food chain for sustinance (whether that be veggies or animals.)
As my point seems to have been understood I will leave it with just repeating, "As long as the animal is slaughtered while showing no signs of illness I would probably atleast try to consume it." |
