| What is the best combination of fish for a ten gallon tank? Hi,
I'm new here.
Actually, I'm completely new to keeping fish.
I just wanted to know what was the best combination of fish to put in a ten gallon tank without over stocking.
I want as many fish as possible.
Any answers please.

| Hmm, it might be sort of hard to start with a ten gallon. I just started this year, and trust me, my 39 gallon was barely enough...
Make sure you have a good book on fishkeeping.
Hopefully I will be able to give an unbiased answer since I have yet to be won over by bettas.
What type of fish do you want? Schoolers, schoalers, bottom-swimmers, mid-level swimmers... More info please! |

| Its not me that you'll have to work on, its my dad! If it was my choice, I'd have as many tanks as my room could hold! |

| okay, ten gallons you know isnt that much. I had a ten gallon and only really got into fish once I got the 55 because then you can start really getting a 'community' going. Some easy ways of getting bigger tanks are Craiglist, yardsales, and the classified section of a local newspaper. If none of those fit in you budget and you have to get a ten then here is some common combinations, fish that are pretty and they can put up with beginner mistakes.
You could have...
1 Betta and 3-4 oto catfish
3 trios of endlers livebearers
a cherry shrimp colony
1 trio (or three male) guppies
5 cherry barbs
and thats about all I can think of at the moment.
Also there are some things that every aquarist needs to know. Check out the nitrogen cycle http://www.fishlore.com/NitrogenCycle.htm I think that I made the link and know you will need to get a test kit as it is absolutely essential for having fish. The best test kit is the API master liquid test. |

| I could prob. think of more if you gave some more info on what you like.. Maybe look at some of the fish descriptions on the regular Fishlore site, so we can get a feel of what you like..
My platies and danios have been easy and fun, so maybe those? |

| Welcome to Fishlore.
The maximum number of fish that you could fit in a 10g tank would be 10 male Endlers. |

| Hi dr stud
I would go for zebra danios , they are small ( you could get away with 6 ) and cheap . If on a budget , you wont need a heater unless you live somewhere really cold.
Hope this helps. |

| no I wouldn't do danios in a 10. They stay small, but have you ever watched them swim? they love to dart all over and up and down a ten just wouldnt provide the best swimming room that danios need. |

| Hi Dr. Stud and welcome to fishlore!
it is very important that you know about the nitrogen cycle and i think someone here already gave you the link to it.
once your tank is cycle then you'r good to put fish in it.
i would do 6 neon tetras. they are very pretty and great color and very inexpensive.
good luck and keep us posted! |

| If you don't have a heater already you could consider 4 or 5 white cloud minnows, or one paradise fish. Paradise fish are very territorial, known jumpers, and don't need to have a heater. White clouds are very pretty and pretty easy to take care of. If I had a place to set up my 10 gallon that I have squirreled away that is what I would consider. |
