plants and substrate for cory/betta tank
What type of substrate should I use for a ten gallon setup that I am thinking bout. It will have three two inch cories, 1 blue male betta, and a few live plants. And what plants would be easy to take care of that the bettas and cories will like. Thanks.

Re: plants and substrate for cory/betta tank
I know that Cories like sand. I don't know much about sand though.

Re: plants and substrate for cory/betta tank
I would say corys need sand, mine sieve the sand looking for food, it's odd seeing sand shooting out of their gils.
Bettas like tall, large leafed plants to sleep on so they're close to the suface, as they like to breathe from the suface ever now and again.

Re: plants and substrate for cory/betta tank
Thank you both. Any suggestions on two inch cories whose coloration would look good with Satin (my royal blue, i think, betta)

As for color, it all depends on what you like.

Re: plants and substrate for cory/betta tank
The following Cories are around 2 in:
C. adolfoi
C. arcuatus
C. bilineatus
C. concolor
C. elegans
C. gomezi
C. guapore
C. julii
C. leucomelas
C. metae
C. napoensis
C. panda
C. polystictus
C. rabauti
C. trilineatus
C. xinguensis
I got this from http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/619.htm
I gave you the scientific names instead of common because I have seen the same Cory called 3 different things at 3 different stores, so you kind of need to know the scientific name to know what they are...
Note that there are 2 even smaller Cories (C. pygmaeus I think and something else), but both species are mid-level swimmers instead of bottom dwellers and need to be kept in shoals of 6.

Re: plants and substrate for cory/betta tank
Thanks 0morrokh, that will be very helpful. The reason I asked about help for the colors is just because I am partially color blind... so I cant really tell what goes with what.

Re: plants and substrate for cory/betta tank
Oh...well, all cories are shades or mixtures of white/tan/brown, and a lot have darker or lighter markings...so you don't need to worry much about matching, basically they're all light brown.

Re: plants and substrate for cory/betta tank
Is there a good place online to get plants... cuz the petsmart near me doesnt have the selection that is on the website. And even if it did the plants dont look very healthy.

Oh yeah and what does "Do not bury the rhizone in substrate when planting" mean. All of these plants on the website seem to say it.

Re: plants and substrate for cory/betta tank
I have asked both questions you just asked...
As for the second one, it's been a while but the rhizome is like the main root or somethin and you can't bury it or it'll rot; it's basically what all the roots and leaves grow out of I THINK.
I didn't really find out where to order plants online...if you find out let me know cause I still need to order plants for my new 20g.

Re: plants and substrate for cory/betta tank
I just ordered 6 java ferns and a clump of java moss (I'm not impulsive what are you talking about : ) for 36 bucks total, including shipping from www.bettatalk.com. She says she keeps her plants completely fish free so there is no chances of disease. These are the only two plants that she sells though. Man I hope I dont regret this decision in the morning.

Re: plants and substrate for cory/betta tank
I don't think you will, both plants are awesome. You know they all have to be attached to something, right? If you don't want to spend a fortune on driftwood, plastic decor works just fine.

Re: plants and substrate for cory/betta tank
My personal favorite cory's are the panda cory's. They are so much cuter to me. I have several other cory's but the panda's are my favorite.
