snails and golden algae eaters

I have recently bought a hundred litre tank. I have 5 platies, 5 scissor tails and 2 golden algae eaters.

I also have lots of unwanted snails. It seems that these came in to the tank on the plants - i now know I need to awash any new plants I add.

I have bought some chemical to get rid of the snails however this hasn't worked and the number is increasing by the day.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to solve this problem.

I also have 2 algae eaters. Both were the same size 6 weeks ago - however one is now roughly six times the size of the other. I have noticed a baby platy this afternoon and was wondering if this increase in size could be due to an extra food supply? Do you think this growth will continue and such a rate and does this fish have the potential to be threat to the other fish in my tank?

I would be extremely grateful for any help - especially as the guys at the local shop don't seem that clued up.

Re: snails and golden algae eaters

Chinese Algae Eaters (yours is a golden form) are known to become aggressive as they grow. So I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually start to bother the other fish.

Take out the chemicals; they are harmful to the fish as well as ineffective as you have noted. I found a good article on snail control, let's see if I can find it...

How big is the tank in US gal?

Re: snails and golden algae eaters

Thanks for the info.

My tank is roughly 25 us gallons...so I have room for more fish. I was really hoping to get the snail problem sorted before introducing any more fish - so i think the idea of introducing snail eating fish will be ideal for me.

Thanks again!

YoYo loaches would be wonderful - they'll eat the snails right up. They get to be a few inches long and will eat almost anything!
