It really is up to you what time you turn them on, just dont leave them on for more than 10hrs max or you may start to have a algae problem.

HI, WELCOME TO FISHLORE, I don't remember saying that before, so hi.....

Lights should be on no more than 10 hours a day to keep down algae. This is your choice....when you are there to enjoy them.

Your fish don't really "need" the light. Your plants will if you have any real ones in the tank, and you can research more about plants needs on. www.plantgeek.net

If I worked out of my home I'd have lights on before work, then after I got home........

I am pretty new to this and in no way an expert, but that is what I do susitna - I have a timer set so that the lights are on in the morning when I get up and go off a little bit after I leave, then they come back on right before I get home and then go off again around 10:30. It seemed a little odd at first on the weekends when they werent on in the middle of the day, but I am used to it now.

We like to see our fish, I'm not so sure they love to have hundreds of watts of light blinding them all day....I think they do just fine without artificial light....the plants on the other hand. If you have real ones, they need at least 10 hours.

Hi!

My plants get 12 hours. I'm excited because my Echindorus 'Tropica marble queen' is sending out a flower shoot!

I dont have any lights ( dont have plants ), so thats an option too.
Danios always seem to be on the move so I dont think you need to influence your fish to come out , you just need to decide on how you view them.
A light coloured background would help show off the standard Zebra Danio and a dark background for the Gold type.

in the morning and evening (before turning the lights off) I place my light strip on top of the HOB filter. This gives a sunrise/ sunset effects, the tanks looks very pretty with this mutted lighting and i get to keep the lights on longer.

No real plants here. I still feel new to all of this. Even though I grew up with several tanks in the house, my mom and my brother always did all of the work - Dad & I just enjoyed looking at them. I figure that I need to master keeping happy fishies before I try real plants!
