feeding fish??

At my job we have a fresh water fish aquarium. It has 4 lg. goldfish, 2 angle fish and a few others I'm not sure the species. They are only feeding them goldfish food. Is this healthy for the tropical fish?

Keep goldfish and angelfish together is unhealthy for all the fish. Goldfish require cooler tempatures between 65F-70F (I believe thats the correct range but I could be wrong) and are mega waste producers while angelfish will need tempatures between 76F-80F and can be rather delicate.

Is ther any way you can talk with the person "incharge" of the tank and see if you can work something out? There is plenty of infomation in the freshwater fish - Species Specific board that can help you.

Yeah, tkfury is right, goldfish and tropical fish do not belong together. Let us know if you find anything out, if you can have another tank or find a new home elsewhere for either the tropical fish or the goldfish.

Goldfish actually don't require cooler water, they require changing water temps, something that would kill most fish. So I agree with the last two posts that they don't belong together.

Aside from this, feeding the angels goldfish food probably isn't good. Goldfish tend to eat more vegetables than other fish, and I think angels tend to be more on the carnivore end of things.

Ah, that I wasn't aware about, sorry. Do you mean something like seasonal tempature changes (I've heard a lot of people keep goldfish in ponds in my area but never gave it any thought).

Nothing to be sorry about. The current term is "temperate water", basically meaning "constantly changing". The old term was "cool water" or "cold water", which meant the same thing, but could easily be interpreted differently.

Yes, carp (the ancestors of goldfish) live in streams and lakes that are subjected to seasonal temperature changes. The reason that I make the point of saying that they don't necessarily need cold water is that a goldfish is actually more capable of dealing with 85+ degree water than most tropical fish. It can only do so for awhile (a few hot days in summer, for example). Traditionally, goldfish and koi (close relative) were kept in decorative Asian ponds, which were subjected to those same temperature changes. Thus, goldfish prefer an unmoderated water temperature. Where an angel's natural habitat would probably only vary a few degrees in temperature throughout the year, a goldfish's "natural" habitat could vary by tens of degrees throughout the year.

Hi!

Wow sir - I can't wait to baffle my friend who thinks she's a 'fish expert' who tried to convince me that filters are for lazy fishkeepers, full water changes are good etc..

Hi!

Yeah, my friend was nuts until I 'trained her'... She had three goldies, 2 corys (I know) and 2 ADF's in an unheated gal! Her tank situations OK now thanks to me.

Yeah. Like I said in another thread, for every well-educated aquarist there are like ten who spout some nonsense and claim to be experts.
