Can I add fish to this little crew?

Hi There, newbie to the group here...

I just moved 6 fish cross country via car and somehow, they survived. Actually, the moved TWICE during that time, but that's another story for another time.

My problem is that I had quite a few more fish in my 45 gallon and over about the past year, I lost them for a variety of reasons. Now that I am left with the 6 - 2 clown loaches one giant catfish (I don't recall what kind, sorry), and two Leporinus' - they have become, as you'd imagine, VERY territorial and I am afraid that I cannot introduce any new fish, or even crustaceans (which would be fun) into the tank with them.

Any ideas?

Thanks so much!

MC

Hi MC and welcome to fishlore.
Im afraid that your 45 g tank is already pretty much over stocked. Your clown Loaches will grow close to 12 inches each, your Leporinus will grow to about 9 inches each, and no telling how big your Giant Catfish will grow to.
So as you see.. it seems that there are more than enough inhabitants in your tank right now. Your Leporinus will be aggressive towards each other as you are finding out and can be aggressive towards the other fish as well.
IMO I really wouldnt think about adding any more fish to that tank...

Thanks, but...

Hi Kate,

Well, I've had them all long enough so that they won't grow any longer (probably due to the other fish that were in there). Surely the Leporinus are agressive - I really should never had bought them!

But anyway, The catfish is about 5 inches, the Leporinus' are each about 6 and the loaches are about 3 and 1.5 inches respectively.

Make a difference?

thanks!

Hi!

I think you should take them back and start again. That tank isn't big enough - and you'll get more joy out of a community.

Ha!

Thanks Hatchet, good point. BTW I used to have a sweet pair of Hatchets in this tank. Loved those guys!

Hi MC, well, you have had a tank running for three years, so you must know what you are doing. Sometimes we get the wrong size fish and end up doing what we can...
Your fish are small enough now.. but Im going by the adult size for comparison in the earlier post.
good luck with your guys.. but still.. I would not add anymore fish for awhile.

Hi!

So, do you plan on getting several larger tanks for them, or taking them back to the LFS? For future reference - Hatchets need a school of at least 6.
