What fish to get!

Hello,

I just sold all my guppy's today so now I have two 5 gal. tanks that will be ready to be fishafied in a couple days! I'm just wondering if you guys have any ideas for fish to keep! I was thinking of getting a few bettas but I dont't know what to put in a tank that small! I'm looking forward to your thoughts!

Matt

One betta with a few cories per tank would work.

I like cories more than shrimp. They are so cute and have great personalities. Shrimp are nice too, but that's just my preference.

You really can't get "a few bettas", one per tank or there will be problems. If you get corys, get them first. If you put the betta in first it might pick on the corys.

Hi!

Personally - I'd only go for 1 Betta a tank. They are the greatest fish in the world (IMO) - and their personalitys can be ruined when you add a bunch of Corys!

Ya know what im not going to put anything in them just yet I just figured out today that my neibors (or however you spell that) are moving and I get there nice 30 gal tank!! But ill be putting my Convict Cichlid in there then ill get a betta and put him in the 10 gal tank! And yes, I know the Cichlid is a little big for the 10 gal tank but I just got him from a friend and hes only like a inch long so...He'll be fine for a week or two! Oh and wow I would never have thought a dwarf puffer was only a inch or two long! And a 5 gal tank was a great tank for them!

Thats the only problem for 5g tanks. You are pretty limited. For most fish especially schoolers, they require a minimum of 10g. A betta and some small catfish would work.

Hi!

If you want Dwarf Puffers you will need a fully planted tank. (Yes... You know what I mean) You'll probably want a 'snail farm' as well.

Hi!

Live food works. But snails are great! A small tub with pond snails will do.

put a gallon glass jar on a window sill. add water and a couple pond snails. every time you trim your plants put the cuttings in the jar. if you clean out your fridge and find wilted lettuce put it in the jar, before you know it your dwarf puffer will have enough live snails to last him years!

Well a 5 gallon aquarium isn't that big so choose wisley...especially when it comes to fish size.
Some possible suggestions are:
Various corydorus species (3)
Small platy species (2)
or
Guppies, which we understand you've already sold (3)
Single male betta (1)
or
Small juvenile zebra danios (3)

Sorry, thats about all the fish that will fit...5 gallon isn't alot!

E&G

P.S: STOP THE FISH COLORING!

My LFS will order the dwarf puffer but it will take a day for it to arrive then I have to pick it up as soon as it gets there because they will not put it in there tanks eventhough half the fish area (basement of store) is salt water tanks! so...I'll get the male betta and move my algea eaters into that tanke too, seeing as they keep getting picked on in the other tank!

The dwarf puffer I am talking about is totaly freshwater. They are very agressive and can only be kept with otos ( according to badmans) They like live black worms, snails, brine shrimp, and ghost shrimp. You could also raise ghost shrimp with a male betta in the other 5 gal and start a brine shrimp hatchery which is raising 3 foods they would need so you could become pretty self sufficient.

so in a 5g you could fit a pair of dwarf corys and single male betta. Also you should add the corys first. Is that right? That seems to be what I read.

cories should always be kept in groups of 6 so yes you CAN fit a pair of cories in a 5 gal but that DOESNT mean you SHOULD

Do you know of any websites that have information on this puffer? Also the algea eaters I have are otos so that would work out for me and the snails and shrip hatchery too! So...ill look around but any more info you can give would be great! Also both 5 gal tanks are just starting cycling!

I would try the puffer. I guess I can get the puffer when I put the honey gouramis in the 55 then put Tay (turtle) in the 30. that would open the 15.
