Try to find a copy of Peter Hiscocks book "Creating a Natural Aquarium" Great book, with lots of good info in a small volume. Amazon has it cheap if the shipping to Oz is reasonable. (Just never mind the one nasty review from the guy who whined about it not being 100% accurate to each reason. He obviously didn't read the first chapter saying these were practical and easy to make replicas of specific regions.) Lots of ideas on how to create various looks from all over the world. Another source of inspiration can be the AGA contest site. http://showcase.aquatic-gardeners.org/2007.cgi Obviously, these are heavily biased to live plants, but there are some awe-inspiring tanks in there.

You would be able to do a really nice tank with african cichlids. I am just figuring out how to set my own cichlid tank up (only a 40 G though). There are so many different kinds and they are so beautiful. Today I went to a new fish store and they had a Lake Malawi mbuna tank set up that was about 120 gallons and I loved it. I can't give you much advice on what fish to choose cause I am still trying to find that out for my own tank, but a lot of people on the forum have good ideas. Good luck!

Wish I had room and funds for that big of a tank. I like the natural looking setups. I'm not sure on the type of fish. I am getting Cichlids as I like the colors of them.

What I would go with:
-Black gravel (bring out the color of the fish and surrounding, your main attention should be on them anyways)
-Variety of plants (I prefer live,as long as agreed with fish)
-Mix of Large/small stones (provide hiding and river/lake bed effect)
-Fish (I like more colorful fish, which is why I'm going with the Cichlids). Watch out, from what I've read with them as they can be quite aggressive, but with a larger tank should be ok with other types (Please correct me if I am wrong).

I like the slate? rock as you can prop it up an a smaller rock or stagger them on top of each other to give lots of hiding spaces and cool looking caves. I would then put some of the plants fake or living in between some of the rocks to give a more natural feel to it.

Just my 2cents worth. Maybe it will help

Good luck!

Also, If you paint the outside of the back of your tank black or dark blue, the colors of your fish will really pop out!

I have a little lego man hidden in all of my tanks, long story, so it carries a theme from tank to tank other than that I like natrual tanks.

maddygirrl I know you just got the tank but can you pop a picture of it showing those rocks?

You'll probably get some suggestions that would go along with what you have.

Lucky you Maddy!

That sounds like 450 odd litres! (My preferred unit of measurement.)

I think you should try out about 30 Common Hatchets or 20 Marbled Hatchets for the surface. 20 Glowlight tetras, 20 Cherry Barbs, 20 Harlequin Rasboras, 15 platys (Only one sex!) and 3 Male/Female pairs of Blue gouramis for the middle.
The bottom could have a school of 30corys - and maybe a few dwarf Plecos like Bristlenose, Flash and Clown. PERHAPS an RTBS.

Well, that's my opinion. Maybe you migth want to add on more school? The hatchet fish are amazing!
