Eel information

Hi, I purchased a 10 gallon aquarium for my son and set the system up like it told me to. We bought an eel not sure of the name sorry. And a catfish. The catfish lived for 5 days. Is it possible that the catfish died because of the eel? We were just wondering what anyone thought. I treated the water and the temp was normal. Also, there were a large amount of foamy bubbles on top of the water. Not sure if that's from the filter but since the cat fish is gone the bubbles aren't nearly as bad. I even asked my kids if they put soap in the aquarium (that's how many were in there.)

How old are the kids?

Could you call the store you bought the fish from to find out the names? The names are essential in figuring out what could've caused the problems. Any idea what kinda catfish you had? There are not a whole lot of commonly available catfish that are good to go in a 10 gallon tank.

Did you cycle your tank before putting fish in?

What do you mean by normal temp? Normal is a relative term. Considering there is such a wide range of temperatures that different types of aquatic critters prefer normal can refer to a lot of things.

A tip of advice: Always research fish indepth before buying them to make sure you have the means to properly care for them.

thanks for your concern, however the eel died yesterday. so i'm contacting the store where i purchased them from to see what their excuse is. sorry to bother ya'll.

p.s. we did cycle our tank 24 hours before we put the fish in and treated the water. when i say normal about the temp it was 70-79 degrees from what the themometer stated.

Sorry to say, but 24 hours isn't enough time for the tank to fully cycle, unless you're using Bio-Spira. The old advice to wait 24 hours before putting fish in is from the days when additives that removed chlorine/chloramine didn't exist, and it took 24 hours for them to evaporate out of the water.

Read this article about what it takes to cycle a tank: http://www.fishlore.com/NitrogenCycle.htm
