How to school?

I'd like to get some tetras and the profile pages say they need to be in groups of 5 or more. Now, can I get 5 different kinds of tetras or do all 5 have to be the same kind?

I've read some postings about having different types of cory's in a school. Is that ok for the tetra's and other schooling fish?

5 of the same kind, although generally 6 is the minimum school. The same with Corys, although they tend to shoal more and you could keep a group of 2 or 3 at the minimum.

How big of tank is this for?

I am thinking about getting some tetra's for my 10G shrimp tank. As far as I understand, shrimps keep to the bottom so I'm looking for small fish that swim middle even top to share. Since it's a 10G, can't get too many or big and any big fish would eat my shrimps. I've read some people have luck keeping bottom feeders and tetra's with their shrimps so I want to give that a try.

all of my tetras have schooled together, although it is rare that they do this, it does happen. for small tetras, you could go with black phantoms, or neons

Hi, Miraloma,
I have a 55 gallon with cherry shrimp mixed with fish. The fish are molly fry, platties & fry, neon rainbows, dwarf corys, and one BN pleco. I have to do lots of water changes to keep the water good for the shrimp, (they can't tolerate high nitrates), but as far as the fish & shrimp - they seem to get along just fine.

I can't say for sure that the fish have NEVER eaten a shrimp, but there is java moss, and lots of rocks, wood, and shells, and I put in 25 shrimp, now there are more like 200! So it seems to work..

Your 10 gal. tank on the other hand will have to be limited. I am fairly sure a small tetra like a cardinal would do fine, it would be lovely with cherry shrimp, you just couldn't have enough to have a true "school", but 6 would be ok.

Miraloma, if you can find a tetra called Axelrodia Riesi (or the Ruby Tetra) you could have quite a large school of them in your 10 gal, since they're only about 1/2" long each. In a planted tank, they would make a lovely display with your shrimp.

You can see them at the following link:

Look out you need to get them all at the same time order or they will have trouble schooling, or at least my tiger barbs did for the longest time but they're ok now. Best of Luck!

I think tetras are different than barbs in that regard -- they're probably the most tightly schooling fish in aquariums, and newcomers join the school almost immediately. Unless there's a big difference in size, within a day you usually can't tell the new fish from the pre-existing ones.
