filter make a difference?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but, If you have an enormously large filter for your tank that could handle like a 55gallon tank, but you're tank is only 29gallons, could you have more fish than average? Or is surface area more important if you want to have more fish? are there any problems with having a unessecarly powerful filter? did i spell unessecarly right? is that even a word? Does it sound like i have any idea at all what i'm talking about? probably not

Makes perfect sense to me.

How many fish and what kind are you talking about? Having "more than average fish" is possible with powerful filtration, but a lot depends on the fish, plus overcrowding is never good since it can cause stress which in turn can bring on disease.

A powerful filter is fine, as long as the fish are not being buffeted around, although there are fish who prefer a strong flow of water. If they are being knocked around, you can elastic band some extra filter floss over the outflow to disperse the water a bit. This will not affect the filter's performance.

well ..they thing is that its always good to go a step up. realy it means it will filter teh water faster etc...im not sure if it will be able to give you more fish...i would say maybe you could push the limt maybe alittle... but not to much

I really don't have many fish at all in my tank right now. just a school of danios, bleeding heart tetras, and a molly(who i will be getting some friends soon), i would never stock it like one of those feeder fish tanks at the petstore. aren't those painful to look at? The filter doesn't blow the fish around really. it used to be my brother's filter for his 55 gallon saltwater tank but after my normal filter broke he gave me his. don't worry, i cleaned it properly

As long as the fish aren't being stressed, injured or killed by the filtration, I don't see anything bad about some extra filtration. I think it might let you have a little more flexibility to go a slight bit over the regular bioload as far as chemistry goes, but I would still stick to around 30" (adult size) of fish since they'll get crowded and more likely to be damaged by the filtration if there's too many fish in there.
