| Other cold water fish than goldies Hey the only cold/temperate fish I have ever seen or heard of are goldfish. Just out of curiosity are there any others that are housed in the home aquarium?? |

| Minnows (white cloud), and mosquito fish are a couple, the only ones I know of. |

| Yea, I never noticed that, but I just looked in one of my books and White Clouds don't like water above 72F. |

| Paradise fish can live in quite cool water, although they prefer temps in the 70's. |

| There are actually quite a few fish normally considered tropical that are fine with (or even prefer) temps below 70. A lot of livebearers, catfish, loaches, danios/minnows, etc. can be kept in an unheated tank at room temp. But most wouldn't appreciate super cold water.
There are also some people who keep small native North american fish like shiners, darters, small sunfish, etc. |

| Zebra Danio, Rosy Barb, Dojo Loach, Ticto Barb, Fathead Minnow etc. are relatively cold water fish like Goldies, required temperature is normally below 20 degrees C for them. |

| Thanks for the list, Neville! There's also the butterfly loach.
Buuut, most fish are unsuitable to share with goldies if that's what you wanted the suggestions for. |

| One of the swordtails that prefer cooler temps is x. birchmanni.
They are found in the mountains of southern Mexico.
Just about any fish native to the US except those in Texas, Hawaii or Florida are considered temperate water fish.
However, most are NOT suitable for housing with goldfish.
We are currently breeding both white cloud minnows and mosquito fish here at the Fishhouse. |

| Bitterlings, sticklebacks, Red shiners, European minnows, gudgeon plus a few native species. Although hard to find these are a few cool-cold water aquarium fish.
Hillstream Loaches like a tank in the mid 60's.

| Just curious, will it not be possible to keep these fish with gold fish in a pond as well? |

| Depends on a few things. Depends on the range of pond temp vs the range the fish can survive, depends on how big/violent the goldies are. (Many are very peaceful, but they might not be). |

Thanks for the info on goldfish.........didn't know they like cold! | Gups can probably take slightly lower temps than some other tropicals, but they technically are tropical fish. |

Range of pond temp depends on the weather. Cold days would be around 19'C, hot days can be anything from 24'C+ |

| Ruffes- Gymnocephalus cernuus, Three spined Sticklebacks- Gasterosteus aculeatus, Bitterlings- Rhodeus spp., Red Shinners- Notropis lutrensis, and Miller's Thumbs- Cottus gobio can all be kept in temeratures 50- 70 they, although not as colorful as tropical fish are really interesting fish. They all can be kept together with the exception of Ruffes which eat anything living. |

| Any of the North American Panfish can be kept in unheated tanks, but not with smaller fish. They would give an Oscar a run for it's money in the aggressiveness department. I'm thinking of turning my 55 into a Pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus) tank once I get my larger tank bought and set up |
