Brands

Alright. Mom now wants me to get specific with brands and prices.

I looked up filters, heaters, etc, etc. Lemme know if you have heard of these brands and if you know if they are good or bad. If the latter than please suggest one.

I will have a 55G tank with a few live plants in it with sand for a substrate.

Filter: Whisper Power Filter 60 or Bio Wheel 350 Power Filter

Heater: Visi-Therm Stealth Heater or Rena Cal Top Light Excel Heater

Thermometer: Coralife Digital Thermometer

Lights and Hood: I have no idea. Suggestions please.

Substrate: Kiddie Play Sand from W-mart

Water condit: I duno once again. Suggestions?

Test kits: Same as above.

Decor: Just some driftwood. Thinking about having like a rock plateau almost. Like a rock wall filled with more substrate about 3-4" tall? It might look cool. Live plants and fake plants. And maybe a homemade rock cave that flows off of the rock wall to. It Makes sense if you can picture it.

Thanks in advance

Filter : I have some Whisper filters of that size. Although one will do for a 55G tank I have two on my 55g because the tank is long enough that one end had dead spots(still spots) with one filter. I prefer aquaclear but couldn't get them.
Heaters- the Rena looks good. You will need the 150 watt
Thermometer - I prefer the little glass ones that float or stick to the side of the tank with a suction cup. $1.99. Although the one you listed does look nice.
substrate - If you want a sand substrate pool filter sand is about the same price but much easier to deal with. Get it at any pool place. PFS doesn't have to be rinsed just poured into the tank then add water and decorations. Kiddie play sand has to be rinsed innumerable times and it will still cloud the tank for a few days. (not harmful but not pretty either )
Unless you plan on aereating your sand about everyother day you need to put some Malaysian trumpet snails in to keep it stirred. this will prevent anerobic pockets of air from forming in the sand.
water conditioner - there are many out there and most do the job. I use the cheap wardleys water conditioner from Wal-Mart $1.97, many recommend Prime. it is a little more expensive but still very good.
Water test kit - aquarium Pharmaceuticals test kit for freshwater aquariums is by far the best test kit you can get. Petsmart has a coupon you can copy on their website and the stores will honor them.
Lights and hood - I'm not really good with advising others on lights so I will leave that for somebody else I do have two 40watt flourescents over my 55g and the plants are doing well.
Hope that helps

I can't add much but just a note about the thermometers - I like the cheap hang on the glass that Butterfly mentioned. I did have one of the digital ones but it kept falling off the outside of the tank so I kept it on the hood but I guess some water got on it while I was doing a water change and there went my thermometer. I do have an extra one I use to make sure new water is the right temperature before it gets added to the tank, I'm careful about it but its nice to beable to fill up the bucket with the right water temp off the bat.

For the decor, from what I understand slate is one of the best rock materials if you're looking into building your own terrance/cave. It will had a lot of weight so you have to be careful but its pretty cheap and all you need is a hammer and some silicone. You can actually build in the caves into the rock wall if thats something you'd like. For wood, I'm not sure but I believe as long as you boil it and soak if need be it should be good. I'm very happy with the piece of mopani I got from DFS but its the only wood I could get my hands on mind you.
