29 gallon community tank ideas

I have been reading and posting for about a week. New 29 gallon tank is currently cycling. I want to have live plants. looking for suggestions on a good group of fish. I don't really know anything about compatability so I will take as much advice as I can get and then research individual fish from their because the current list is a bit long and i don't even know where to start.

you could have a pair of angels in there.. or some livebearer schools.. maybe tetras or barbs.. check out http://www.fishlore.com/TropicalFishProfiles.htm and browse the fish and/or go to where you'd be buying fish and look around (but don't buy yet).. get an idea what you'd like to look at in your tank and take care of.

I have always been a sucker for cardinal or rummynose tetras, or harlequin rasboras in a planted tank, I think shoals of any of those three always always look stunning in and around plants.

IE a shoal of any one of the above, with some corries and shrimp and some ottos to round out the planted tank always looks nice and is a very functioning tank, as the ground crew help keep everything algae free, and the shoal just looks nice in the plants. I really think a healthy shoal of fish looks better then 3 of these and 2 of those and 4 of these etc.

I am starting to like the different strains of danios (the longtails are really beautiful). A group of male guppies would be really neat (the females are more drab, but more importantly, adding females to the mix would require a 2f to 1m ratio or more, and would soon fill your tank with guppy fry).
Nearly any kind of barb or tetra would be good, but this would likely mean that you would have to leave out anything with long fins, as most barbs and tetras are fin-nippers.

I don't find tetras nippy in the least when they are homed with a sizable shoal of there own kind to live with. The only time I have ever had nippy tetras is when there is too few of there kind to swim with.

A group of fish. Someone posted a nice explanation here not long ago, but basically a shoal is like a school of fish, but not as tightly grouped. Schooling fish (i.e., most tetras) stick close together most of the time, swimming as a tight group, and almost seeming to have one mind. Shoaling fish (i.e. corys) like to have others of their species around for safety, but are more independent and don't always stay in a group.

Generally, schooling fish should be kept in groups of 6 or more. Shoaling fish should be kept in groups of at least 3, preferably more.

It depends on what you are looking for. If you want a couple groups of small fish or a large group of 1 fish, then you should get a fish like a neon or cardinal tetra. If you want some larger fish, then something like a pair of angelfish could work. Here is a good link to help you out:

Good luck!

Hello! And Welcome! I'm Amanda...

And thank you, jsalemi!! I posted that link about shoals. Here it is... "Fish" or "fishes", "school" or '"shoal"?

For your information, anytime you see anything that says "Important Topics Stickies" or just "Stickies" it would probably be in your best interest to read those because that's where the information is that the long-time members feel is most important, hence why it is Stickied. (unless it's like "what's your favorite movie...) haha

I agree with most everyone. I think you should look around, go to stores, look online and come back here with ideas. We won't steer you wrong! Here is a compatibility chart. http://www.peteducation.com/article....articleid=3284 It's pretty good. Gives you an idea.... however, I would double check with us first. Even though it says that some fish are compatible, others know from personal experience that they aren't!! (Such as it lists that Bettas are okay to keep with a lot of fish.. when they aren't.)

Anyways! Welcome again!
