First QT now Fry Tanks

Ok. Since we already covered the QT topic now I am thinking about fry tanks. I get way ahead of myself. I dont even have the thumbs up on that tank and I'm already asking about a fry tank. O well its nice to know anyway.

Do I need one?

How big?

Bare or stuff in it?

or does it all depend on the kind of fry?

lemme know all that and anything else you have to add.

Thanks again,
The man with never ending questions, Cory

it depends mostly on the type of fry, but as far as filtration goes, we use either sponge filters or HOB filters with fish net netting secured over the filter intake with a clean rubber band. we keep the bottom bare for easier cleaning. it would need a heater and an airstone (or flexible bubble wand if possible).

Oh yes, filtration is important! You don't want your fry to be sucked into the filter and come out dead, would you? No offense there, Cory! You should use a sponge filter or the box filter to prevent this. You'll need an airstone too. Here's a tip on the airstone:

Put the airstone on the gravel/substrate and cover it with rocks until the airstone is completely unseen. Then, turn on the air pump. The bubbles will squeeze through the rocks! Isn't that magical?

You can use the quarantine tank as the fry tank, too!

And, please don't be afraid to ask questions! We're very happy to help! Isn't that right, fellow members? You're very welcome to ask questions!

we used to do that until we were advised to use the little suction cups to place the air stones about 3/4 of the way down the side of the tank. Placing them in gravel could cause toxin pockets.. but i'd keep a bare bottom tank for fry as they can get squished in gravel and for the cleaning.

We keep just about all the fry tanks barebottomed here.
It makes cleaning easier and helps keep the tank cleaner, as the food does not fall between the substrate where the fry cannot get it.

But we also keep a lot of floating plants and some plants attached to rock/wood in these tanks to allow the fish places to hide/rest.

Plants also reduce the amount of some waste products in the tanks.
