Fish to add???

Hi all.

I currently have a 55g tank with 9 long fin zebra danios (very lively), 1 clown loach (who i think sees himself as a danio and is always swimming mid-tank but seems happy) and a bristle nosed catfish.

I am wanting a bit of advice over what to add.

Clown loaches like to be in groups apparently but they grow too much to have a few in a 55g tank right?? Is another to much too soon?

Also my 1 catfish i never see apart from first thing in the morning when it is happily grazing the side of my tank (then disappears for 12hrs!!)

My other option was 2 kribs and a selection of rainbows but not sure whether this is the right thing to do. i would rather make the fish i have more at home than go for 'pretty' interesting fish if you know what i mean!!

I know its only 2/3 £ per fish but i feel a little protective of them already.....maybe a newby thing but non the less.....advice would be great.

Thanks in advance to all who reply.
(great site by the way....made life easy setting up tank)

Cheers

Catfish are nocturnal, so it probably is hiding once the lights are on.

As far as what to add, you've got 9 danios, total of 18" adult fish. 1 clown loach, 12" of adult fish, 1 bn catfish, 6" of adult length. That puts you at a total of 36" of adult fish. Figuring that you don't want to go over 55" of adult fish, you've got 19" of fish to play with.
You could get another loach to make your first one a bit happier. They prefer groups of 4, but I don't think it's necessary like with other fish.
That would still leave you with 7" of fish. You could go with a few of another type of danio (I've seen a blue one that's really cool) if you're looking to add color. This would probably be the best way to add some "neatness" to this aquarium without disrupting the current inhabitants, in my opinion.
You could get a small school of neon tetras instead of more danios. They're small enough that they're unlikely to bother the danios, the danios shouldn't bother the tetras. Clowns are peaceful, and I don't think they'll go after the tetras, either.

Ghost shrimps are some very interesting creatures on your tank! They're very hardy since they're only scavengers mostly in farms, good for beginners, and, well, interesting! They're quite funny when they swim or eat! You can have maybe 3-4, but they're not really social. They'll also mate whenever they want, you won't need to do anything! They're VERY inexpensive! They're probably the most inexpensive on my aquarium shopping list! But be careful: These shrimps are mainly used as fishermen's bait, so bigger predatorial fish will find them very irresistable. They also shed their skin quite often, but you won't need to remove the skin since some fish will eat it.

Have some of these little shrimps! I mean, don't you like some invertebrates in your tank?

More blessings to your tank!

I'd suggest any livebearers. They are peaceful, very good community tank fish. They would be good additions to your tank, fairly inexpensive and colorful. If you have 19 inches left, you could have quite a bit of room for combinations. Swordtails are the biggest and you probably would only want 3-4 (one male, the others female...or all females). Platies are only 2 inches each, so you could get quite a few and the varieties are endless. The same for guppies.
Have a great time deciding!

The SLFS (sort-of LFS) I was at yesterday had them 5 for $1, so yea, they're not expensive.

My suggestion is to get cherry barbs. They're very colorful and they get along great with danios.

Thanks all for the replies.
I eventually went for 2 kribensis (m and f) and 6 neon tetras.
My tank is now fully cycled, crystal clear and there is something going on in the tank at all times to watch, great chill out time watching these co-habitat.

Will def post again at this site as all you guys are so helpful.

Thanks again.
