Suggestions for Fish I Can Keep (46 gal)
Hi everyone! Soon I will be getting a 46 gallon bowfront tank. I don't have it yet but that's the one I've been planning on. I am really debating on the kinds of fish I'll be putting in it, and I'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions on how I can make my perfect tropical community tank!
These are the fish I currently have that I'll be moving to the new tank:
*) 1 Pleco
*) 4 Long-finned Danios
These are the fish I really, REALLY want:
*) Mollies
*) Hatchetfish
*) Corydoras Catfish
*) German Blue Rams or Bolivian Rams (would this work?)
*) Swordtails
These are the backups, the MAYBES:
*) Barbs (tiger, cherry, rosy, any type is good)
*) Serpae tetra
*) Neon tetras
*) Angelfish?
Now I clearly know I CANNOT fish all of these fish in a 46 gallon tank, which is why I'm going to have to make some decisions here. The ones listed in the really, REALLY want section I HAVE to have (especially the rams, I've fallen in love).
If you have suggestions, name the fish and the quantity for my future 46 gallon tank. I'd appreciate it very much! If you have anymore suggestions, please offer them. Any questions, just ask.

I will suggest Goldfish but if u wanna keep goldfish u have to go for only goldfish, but they can look very very nice if u mix up black moors, orandas, fantails and pearlscale in a big tank, i mean fancy types, but it is better not to mix fancy types and common or carp goldfish. because common goldies r fast eaters; they will eat up all the food before slower fancy types could reach it.
Goldfish will deffinitely look much better than livebearers, barbs or tetras in a 46g .

I'm guessing your pleco is a common pleco? So he'll be growing to about 18". The Danios get to 2" each and can be nippers when kept in groups smaller than 6, so you may want to get 2 more for the community tank.
That would leave you with a max. of 16" of fish. (although the pleco puts out a lot of waste - if you could trade him for a trio of otos, you'd save a lot of space in the 46g)
Hatchetfish can be kinda jumpy and with Rams in the tank, you could end up with dried hatchetfish on the floor.. i'd leave them and the mollies (size) out and go with a pair of Rams (about 8" total there). That would leave you with about 8" more to work with.
With the 8", you could fit in 4 cory cats. I'd still be doing 25% pwc 2x a week because of the pleco and more frequent substrata cleaning.

Thanks for the help everyone!
Sorry, I'm not all that interested in keeping goldfish. I've had my fair share of those in my lifetime and I'm looking forward to a tropical community.
COBettaCouple, thanks for your suggestions. I was really wanting some mollies though (they're my very favorites) so maybe I can work out a situation where I can fit some of them in.
The common pleco has been acting strangely lately. All of the danios remain fine but I think the pleco could be sick. He's showing no other signs except for the fact that he hardly moves anymore (he did a lot when I first got him) and he's been losing his color.
Thanks again everyone!

No Tiger Barbs with Angelfish. They will rip the angels' fins apart. Serpae tetras are also quite nippy.
If you want Rams, I would wait til the tank is established with excellent water params, since they are very sensitive. They're timid as well, so I would not put boisterous fish with them, like mollies, or aggressive ones like Swordtails. A school of Cardinal tetras would be more appropriate.
Remember that livebearers are non-stop poop and fry factories and foul the water quickly.

how big is your Pleco? You should post a thread in the freshwater diseases forum or the Pleco forum to get advice from our experienced Pleco owners.
i'm not sure if the rams and mollies would get along or not.. it would be something that you would want a backup plan for if they didn't.

Feed your pleco algae wafers that sink on the bottom, actually plecos hardly move during the day, they r nocturnal, gve it some hiding places where it can rest during the day. i think mollies would be fine with danios and pleco........
swordtails r a little aggressive and barbs r fin nippers so they r quite unpredictable, but angels will be ok with mollies

Golden barbs are OK in terms of fin nipping, although you should keep them in a group of around 6 imo. Just have to bear in mind that they can grow to 3".
I've just had to get rid of some swordtails that were fin nipping in my tank.

Mollies
Cherry barbs
Rams
Angelfish. ( you wont regret it! )
Did you open a thread on your pleco? Its normal for them to be nocturnal but not to change colour.

Are you serious or just bugging me? lol The direct translation from Dutch to English is 'ditch'='killi' and fish=fish, so ditchfish. Just a little something interesting.

mollies are excellent fish
we had two yellow mollies $3 each
they had a total of about 100 babies
about 50 of these are adults now
if we had sold these fish we would have made a profit of $146
that would be amazing
marbles in my opinion are the most beautiful mollies
