Having problems with new aquarium - please help

I am having some difficulties with my aquarium and I am new at the hobby, maybe someone can help. I recently got a used 29 gallon tank, and I've had it now for a little over two months. I bought a heater, filter, etc and rinsed all gravels and tank decor, filled the tank, I used a water conditioner to remove chlorine from the water, ran the tank with the filter for over a week before adding fish. I brought home two mollies, two swordtails, and two tiny cherry barbs from Petco and I was told they were compatible tankmates. Three of the fish died and it prompted me to have the water tested. The worker at Petco said that the water was perfectly fine with the exception of a little hardness, and to add a little salt, which I did. Since I have started, the water has been crystal clear, never cloudy, I have regulated the temperature between 78 and 80 degrees, kept the filter running 24/7, and have changed the water regularly. Despite my efforts the fish keep dying. I have added fish, and lost them. I have three that have lived for about one and a half months, which is the longest of any of them. Less than a week ago I bought two creamsicles at Petco, and three days later one of them had already died, and the second one is looking like he might face a similar fate. I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong. I have only bought fish from Petco and have never gone anywhere else, so I'm not sure if it could be their fish rather than my own mistakes??
I currently have three silver mollies, one yellow molly, one swordtail, one cherry barb, two danios and a small silver tail shark (lady at Petco said he would be compatible with others). The creamsicle seemed to have fin rot (the first fish I have had that had it) but the rest didn't seem to fit the description of any of the dieseases I seen in the diesease section of this website. Any reason these fish keep dying, have I missed the mark on something Or should I just stop buying fish at Petco? LOL I would appreciate any help at all.

Re: Having problems with new aquarium - please help

How often have you been doing water changes? Have you tested the water yourself? I'd reccommend getting a test kit (API seems to be the fav. here, ive found out the sticks are costly and unreliable) if you don't have one already. It helps people here on fishlore help you out a lot better if we know the parameters on your tank.
Personally I would make sure you keep doing water changes (I would be doing them every 2 days or so) of about 20-25%. You're tank very well might not be cycled yet. If this is the case, you need to keep doing water changes to keep your fish alive. I also like the Prime water conditioner, as it makes the ammonia levels non toxic to the fish.
I'm sure others will have good ideas too, this is just to get started (others are much more experienced than I am!)

I too am betting your tank is not cycled and the fish are being done in by either ammonia or nitrite. Take a look at this link for an explanation of the cycle: http://www.fishlore.com/NitrogenCycle.htm

I'd recommend getting this: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Produc...&N=2004+113074 and testing the water yourself. I wouldn't trust Deathco to do a test right or to have any healthy fish in stock.

Prime for conditioning your tap water would be an excellent idea as mlinden84 suggested along with her water change recommendation. do you have other choices for places to buy fish?

Re: Having problems with new aquarium - please help

Thanks for the tips. I drained out about 20% of the water yesterday and replaced, and I will do so again tomorrow, and see if that helps. I haven't bought a test kit yet, but I am using a water conditioner before I put the water in the tank. There are plenty of other places I could buy fish, I just haven't really looked around much. I have seen some bad reviews for Petco, so maybe I should try out some other places.

Yea, i'd look for a place with no dead fish or sick tanks.. a place that shows some care goes into the tanks and keeping the fish healthy for customers. I'm hoping to find a place like that in Denver.

If your Ammonia = 0, Nitrite = 0, and your nitrate is generally low, then I suppose these are the reasons why your fish keep dying:

(1) Lack of proper acclimatization, especially if your fish store's water parameters are very different from your tank's water parameters. Here is more info about proper acclimatization: http://www.fishlore.com/acclimating-tropicalfish.htm

(2) You're buying fish that are already sick

P.S. Did the person at your fish store tell you specifically that your Ammonia and Nitrite are at 0? Because if they're not, that means your tank is not yet cycled, as others have said above. And this is what most likely keeps killing your fish.

Also, it's not good to start adding many fish at once, as many fish can cause a spike in Ammonia and/or Nitrite in your tank. It's best to stock a tank gradually, adding 1 - 2 fish at a time (if the fish are larger), or maybe a few fish (if the fish are very small). Ammonia and Nitrite are so toxic to fish that even smallest amounts of them can cause your fish to get sick and die.

Re: Having problems with new aquarium - please help

Thats an interesting observation about introducing the fish to the tank! I have done what they said at Petco, just floating the bag in the tank for 15 - 20 minutes, then letting them free. Maybe their nasty fish water from their tanks messed up the balance of my tank? Not sure if that can happen. I haven't bought anymore fish, I am waiting until I can keep the ones I have alive. I haven't had any die since the one creamsicle, and I did notice a change in the behavior of the fish when I changed the water. I have been changing the water every other day for a few days now. How long do I need to continue doing that before that water is considered properly cycled? Still need to go get a test kit...

Re: Having problems with new aquarium - please help

Hi Dasieq. Unfortunately, the words of pet store workers is not always gospel in fish keeping, as we've all sadly had to find out at one point or another. When bringing a fish home, he not only needs to get used to the temperature (floating the bag), but also to the contents of the water (pH, nitrates, etc.). So it is advisable to slowly drip your tank water into the bag, until a significant proportion of the bag water is water from your tank. Then you can let the fish swim in the new tank.

Re: Having problems with new aquarium - please help

get yourself a turkey baster. the dollar stores even have them and they're pretty handy. You can use them to acclimate.. we'll float a fish in a rubbermaid bowl and use the turkey baster to take out some water from the bowl and discard it, then suck in some tank water and squirt it into the bowl.. every 10-15 min, for an hour or so.
