20 Gallon Options

Hey all,

Been doing alot of reading lately but still can't really decide on what to put in my tank.

Currently I have 5 zebra danios and one fish that I'm not entirely sure what it is. Its about the size of the zebra's but its got longer fins, the tank I got them from was just suppose to be zebra's so apparently he snuck in at my LFS shipment.

Anyway I am still trying to decide what to pair with them. I would like something that is colorful and fun to watch but will also get along with some ghost shrimp because I plan on having a couple of those because I just plain like invertebrate (I actually already have two in there right now).

Any suggestions are welcome.

Re: 20 Gallon Options

If you're interested in small fish, as Lilsoccakid said: Neon Tetras are nice. Other small, peaceful, and colorful fish for a 20 gallon tank are many other kinds of tetras (ex. Black Neons or Glowlight Tetras) as well as other fish such as for example Cherry Barbs, Harlequin Rasboras (or other similar and small Rasboras), White Clouds, and many others. The most important thing is that you research the kinds of fish you want to buy before you actually buy them, to see if they will be compatible with your tank size and with other tank mates.

Could it be a fancy variety of Zebra Danio? I've seen Zebra Danios with long fins. Does the fish look like Zebra Danio only with longer fins?

It doesn't really have the stripes that the Zebra's have, I havn't really been able to find any pictures yet that looks like this fish but to be honest I havn't searched that hard.

I forgot to mention that I would like to also get some oto's but I am afraid that if I get oto's and possibly some tera's that I will not have enough tank space to have a large enough school to see the full interaction of the fish.

Right now I should have about 12" of fish in my tank leaving me with only 8" to spare. It says oto's get up to 2 inch and that they do best in groups of 3 or better so thats an additional 6" leaving me with only 2" of fish to spare and I doubt that the tera's would be very happy with only two fish. How much should I be able to overstock? I plan on doing daily water tests with my API kit throughout so I would be aware of any spikes or mini cycles.

Re: 20 Gallon Options

welcome fo fishlore! otos are pretty sensitive and will probably tell you about water chemistry being off before the daily test. a group of 3-4 otos would round out that tank population nicely.

Re: 20 Gallon Options

If you're considering otos, please read our caresheet on them (in the oto section), as they're really sensitive fish and a lot of people have problems at the beginning.
